The main culprits that come to mind are the thermostat is not working or the water pump is failing. Due to age I would replace the thermostat first. I would buy the upper radiator hose assembly that comes with a new thermostat and change out the entire unit. Following the link to SNG Barratt catalog it is piece 7

tweety, if you are draining the system to replace the thermostat, I would spend the little bit extra and replace the water pump too. Replacing the water pump on this car is probably one of the easiest cars to do it on. They are also not that expensive. Yes it is a few extra bucks, but you won't be draining hte system twice when you replace one thing and find out it was the other.

Question: There are cheap water pumps and expensive water pumps (29-129 listed on Rockauto). Which brand do you recommend?

Jag4, I would go with the AC Delco or the Beck/Arnley units. They have the gasket with the pump and from my experience, they tend to have good parts for a reasonable price.

Also before doing all this work which still would need to be done look and find your coolant leak and see if it’s also in the same area where your going to be working. Under the air box / inlet tube for the air box is a plastic tee that is very prone for having a hairline crack in it and if this is your leak then replacing the part earlier mentioned will fix two problems with one part. The part from Sng comes as a complete unit, tee, hoses, thermostat and all if that’s what ends up being your leak.

Overall impressions - I was expecting this to be the worst car ever. It's actually not. I enjoy driving it around the city for daily errands. The AWD is a nice feature, it is surprisingly good in the snow. It's fairly heavy for its size, so the 190 hp is adequate but not exciting or even peppy. The weight helps it feel solid and comfortable. The interior is the best part by far - it has real leather, real wood, real wool carpet.
