Default P0171 & P0174 Help me Please !!!

Hello!

I have a 2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.5, was very excited when I bought it last 4th of July it only had 74k miles bought it from a Acura dealership. I use the metro a lot so I rarely drive it but this past December with 76k miles on it I decided to take it for a drive to work in the winter storm and the Check Engine light came on. Also, I got a Cruise Not Available message across my dashboard. I noticed that when I try to accelerate it stalls like I am stuck in 1st or 2nd gear. I decided to take it to AutoZone to have the codes scan and it came back with codes P0171 and P0174. Call the Acura Dealership and they said they couldn’t fix the car because it’s a Jaguar, I called a Jaguar and from them its sounds like it’s going to cost me a lot of money. Can someone please help me as to what the problem could be?

Jermaine, based on what you are describing, you have 1 of 3 issues. Fortunately, all 3 are easy fixes.

1) breather hose between the intake and the PCV valve. It is a 1" hose that is to the left of the throttlebody. The underside of it will split, resulting in a large vacuum leak, leading to your codes (P0171 and P0174 are lean conditions on banks 1 and 2, aka, front and back sides of the engine). There is an updated hose for our cars as this is a common problem. The new hose is ribbed vice the old one being a smooth hose.

2) vacuum line running between the top of the intake and the brake booster. If you look at this line, right near the bulge in the center of the line (check valve), you will see where this line will crack. New hose that costs about $15 at the local auto parts store.

3) IMT (intake manifold tuning) valves. If you look on the passenger side of your engine, you will see 2 big black plastic pieces facing the passenger fender that are mounted to the intake. These are the IMT valves. There is an o-ring inside the joint that will fail over time, leading to the issue that you are seeing. New o-rings are like $3 each and replacing them takes about 5 minutes per valve. The trick with the lower one is that you can't remove the valve all the way without lifting the top half of the intake off. But ,what you can do instead is stretch the o-ring slightly and it will fit over the outer part of the valve.

It sounds like you are just outside of DC. If you don't mind a little bit of a drive, I am south of you by about an hour near California, MD. If you need some help, just hollar. I'm always willing to turn a few wrenches and get a little greasy.

thermo hit the nail on the head!

One last thing that might be worth a look at is cleaning the MAF sensor. Also cheap and easy to do.

It's 99% one of the three as described by Thermo. Be safe and do all three. If they haven't been done already they will need to be.

Default Thanks!

Thank you all for suggestions! I think I will just replace all three things (IMT O-rings, PCV Hose & Brake Booster) and see what happens. Also, this weekend I noticed that I filled my tank up to a ½ tank and drove about 100 miles and I swear to God my gas hand is on the red for empty, would this also be a cause because of the three things listed?

Thermo, I live in Silver Spring which is not too far, so I am going to take you up on that offer real soon.

Jermaine, having the lean condition can lead to the lower mileage. I also ask you how many short trips you made and if they were all in town. I have noticed with my car that if I do a bunch of small trips where the car never really gets a good warming, the mileage will drop significantly. Getting around 100 miles on a half a tank would not be unreasonable, especially with your codes.

As for getting to my place, hop on I-495, swing on around to the east and then get off at MD-5. From there, you can head south and make it all the way to California, MD (does change into MD-235). Just let me know when you are coming down. Not to push you into anything, but, after April 17th, I am going to be busy for awhile. So, keep that in mind.

Hey guys, I am getting the same codes on my 99 XJ8L but I getting a bit of oil in the air filter housing. Could this be the pcv valve? i havent tried the three things you mentioned first but I will try that! I did clean the MAF sensor and replace the air filter which significantly improved the performance but the oil leaking is just going to ruin my air filter and get my MAF sensor dirty again soon. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

hello Jermainetyl,

I have a 99 Jaguar XJ8L and I had the same error codes that you do on my Jag about 2 months ago. I took it to autozone to have the codes checked and they gave me the same error codes they gave you, I followed Sean B's directions on this pdf form that he gave me to download and bought a new air filter and I have not had a problem since!
