Default parking brake switch?

hello and good day.

i was told by parts place that the parking brake warning indicator switch is part of the lever itself and that i would have to order the whole thing.

is this true or can the switch be replaced by self? and if so does any one know the part number?

thank you

antboss, some members have replaced only the switch. As for a part number, I can not help you there. Your best bet will be to access the switch and then see what numbers are on the switch to then track down who made the switch and possibly a place to buy one. Hopefully one of the members that replaced their switch will come along and have the number for you.

Default Switch PArt of unit

This is interesting, I don't know if it is a part of the hand brake but I suspect it is. I took my center console apart to install a 12volt charger in the box and also connect my video play safety wire. The hand brake switch has a connector on the side for the illumination wire that goes to the Instrumemt panel.

The switch is actually a simple spring mechanism with a plunger in the center that grounds the wire when activated. I would;t think this could actually break

tribe, if it is mechanical, it will break. Regardless of how simple it is. I work around high end pressure switches which are nothing more than a pressure plate pushing against a spring that then has a post the reaches up and pushes a switch. But, we see them fail all the time.

antboss, the parking brake switch only has a single wire going to it. The "other wire" is the metal part of the switch that is in contact with the metal bracket the switch is mounted to (which is acting as a ground). With the parking brake off, the switch is open and the wire has no electrical path it can take. You engage the parking brake, the switch makes up and the switch grounds the single wire to chassis ground. This then tells the computer that the parking brake is engaged. While there is more to it than this, you can think of simply a single wire running from the battery, through the parking brake light, through the switch, to the chassis. Nothing fancy.

My parking brake light would come on for no reason when I was driving. No clue what the problem was, except, when I replaced the ABS pump for a separate reason it cured my parking brake light issue. Go figure...
