Please help: Fan won't turn off after I turn the car off
Model: Jaguar X-type 3.0 -2004,
Here is what happened: It was cold yesterday and heater wasn't blowing hot air but it was cold air coming. So i turned the heat off and drove without heat to home from work. After I reached home I turned the car off and got out of the car and i heard fan noise coming from the car. I waited for few minutes and still the fan was on. I am assuming it was radiator fan. So i opened the hood. Didn't touch any thing. turned the car on again. and turn it off and still the fan was on. I turned the car on again and this time i turned the heat (it was still blowing cold air) and with heat button on, i turned the car off and the fan shut off this time.
I thought my car may be low on antifreeze or something. But it happened again today.
Can someone help me with this? is this because of fan module gone bad? or if there is any relay?
Thank you

Info on the buzzing behind the dash:-
Its a tiny fan which carries on running in humid conditions to circulate the air so you dont get blasted by warm air when you use your climate control. It circulates air across the humidity sensor. It keeps running for a while after you switch off, and starts again when you open a door. It does this so that there is less delay in getting the climate control to the right setting when you switch on (or restart).

Thank you for your quick reply.
I have had this car for 7 and 1/2 years now. This has never happened before. I know the fan stays on for few seconds but this time it wouldn't turn off even after 5 minutes after i turned the car off. And definitely my heat is not working now. This morning it took me 20 minutes to reach work and it was still blowing cold air when i reached work.

Jack, from the sounds of things, you are running low on coolant (check your overflow bottle to make sure it still has coolant in it). From there, if you have coolant, then odds are you are looking at a bad water pump. I am making the assumption that the fan that you heard was the radiator fans running, not something else. You are not very clear as to what fan was running.

Have you checked your coolant level? If the fans are all of a sudden staying on for a long time after shutting the car off I would guess it IS actually starting to overheat. If you have not gotten a high temperature warning light or noticed that the temp gauge has moved from its normal center location that doesn't mean it isn't running hot. The gauge is kind of pass/fail. It seems like it is either in the center and won't go higher until it actually overheats. So, your condition is probably in between. Likely places to start checking would be radiator hoses, water pump and the overflow reservoir. You see any fluid drips on the ground?

Yup.. Initially I didn't see any major leaks.. But it happened again 3 weeks after I refilled coolant so I checked under the car and I did notice a leak. I don't know exactly where. But its looks like (if you standing in front of the car) it is leaking 2 inches left of underside of the battery. I took pictures. Let me see if I can attach it.

Jackbrown, you are looking at either a bad water pump or a bad seal on your thermostat. The more likely problem is the water pump which you can also see coolant puddling on top of the tranny where it meets the engine block. If you don't see coolant there, then I would be leaning towards the thermostat.

Thank you all for the advice. I took y'all s advice and decided to open it up to see if the the leak was from the water pump or not. so i removed the battery and pump belt. It does look like it is from under the pump.. (if i am not wrong)..i am attaching pictures zooming in all the way to close-up of underside of the water pump...to me it looks like one of the bolt is loose..let me know if i am wrong..see the 4th picture and let me know if that bolt is suppose to be like that or it has to be tight..i think it is the same bolt which shows up in my previous pictures which i posted yesterday (only they are taken from under the car and these ones are taken from the top) also i could not reach from the top to tighten this bolt.. and it got dark before i could put the battery and belt back and jack it up to tighten it from under the car.
I will have to try again tomorrow. I think i will not risk to drive this car until i tighten the bolt since it is leaking too fast now. I will ask wife to drop me off to work tomorrow.
Thank you again for your help,,and let me know about this bolt..

I actually checked autozone, napa & Oreilly near my house..none of them had water pump for x-type in store..and at advance auto parts online says one store in my area may have water pump in store (call in first) for 191.99 plus tax..

jackbrown, well, do some more looking. You can use part numbers 57-1653 or 131-2367. These are a little cheaper at roughly $125. Granted, I seem to remember them being cheaper than that when I replaced my water pump a year ago. But, with age, so goes the memory too. It may take a day to get it in, but that will be well worth the money saved.

I thought I'd find an answer to the same problem on here. I can't detect any leaks, nor do I see a radiator fluid level change. Changed out fluid and some hoses two years ago (as precautionary maintenance). Fan never stops. Disconnected battery for over an hour, yet fan starts up as soon as I connect the battery up. There has been no ECM change. Hmmm.

After more investigation, I pulled the F16 fuse from the engine compartment (fan speed 5 amp fuse) and the fans continue to run. From another posted series, this appears to be a cooling fan control module issue. See this thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...rn-off-151977/
Ordering a new module. If this solves the problem, I will update. May take a few days to get the part.

I had the same issue. Fan would never turn off. Replaced the module, then the fan would never turn on at all!!
Caused some overheating, coolant spill and water pump replacement.
Apparently some modules (from China) are no good. I didn't get a chance to fix the issue since I sold the car, but I'm sure it was the module.
If all else fails you can always just splice a switch into the circuit and turn it on/off whenever you want =]

New Fan Control Module fixes the constantly running fan
Ok. Thanks to the write-ups of the same problem here, I was able to correctly diagnose and solve it. I needed a new fan control unit. Searching for these units gives you many results. Beware! The cheaper ones only have 3 pins on the larger connector. These will not work. You need a correctly designed unit, which has 4 pins on the large connector. They will cost more, but save you from trouble. I purchased mine from https://mossmotors.com. They have a nice explanation of these units and what is wrong with the cheaper ones (which might work on Volvo's etc.). They guarantee that their unit is correct for the x-type.
