Default Purge Valve C2S11045-Codes P0455 and P0171/P0174

Hello guys!

I thought I would share this with the group.

For a while now I have had the 3 codes come up on the car sporadically followed by terrible transmission shifting. The codes are for the purge valve and oxygen sensor codes. Only the CEL came on, not the transmission failure light. Everywhere I researched told me that the code 0455 a) does not cause any symptoms and b) is probably just the gas cap. Well, eventually my problem degraded to poor shifting on low gears, even when the light did not come on. And also massive fuel consumption. I am talking more than my V12 E type and my AJ16 XJS combined. No good since my X type is my daily driver.

Anyway, I have done spark plugs, gaskets, hoses, TPS, you name it, I have done it. But the purge valve was always on the back of my head because when I would touch it, it felt like it was pulsating hard. I thought this was normal and dismissed it because everyone says bad purge valves don't cause any drivability symptoms.

So eventually I gave in and bought a purge valve. And the new one does not pulsate at all, my gas consumption has dramatically improved, and my drivability in low gears has improved as well, if not disappeared. I am sure the transmission module has learned to compensate for the problem and adjusted, so that will probably take a week to fully correct.

So, if you are getting a purge valve code and the purge valve feels like its vibrating when you touch it, replace it! It is definately going to effect your X type drivability and fuel consumption.

I keep getting the Rich codes (don't recall what they are, but 0171 and 0174 sound familiar) intermittently, along with an occasional gas smell in the cabin. Talking w/the tech about it the other day and he said most of what he reads indicates either mass air flow sensor or purge valve. You've tipped me toward the purge valve.
Thanks.

P0171/P0174 are LEAN codes. It is VITAL to be SURE about exactly which codes.
