Unhappy Radio - Mute On Ghost?

Lately I have noticed that for no apparent reason the radio would mute itself. Sometimes it comes off by itself, but in most cases not. I then have to press select or the phone button to get sound back. Are my controls on the steering wheel going? Thanks.

Mine mutes itself if I have it cranked up to 11! I figured it's just a safety thingy kicking in.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the battery. Hope that helps.

I have been chasing this for two years. I just replaced the battery, no help. I bought a radio and replaced the radio, no help. So I determined that it is the steering wheel controls. These wires rundown the a pillar location, along the rocker panel, into the trunk, back to the radio. I just cut the wire that controls the steering wheel controls. It works fine now (sans the steering wheel control) and I an happier than a camel on Wednesday. I run the music at level 23, (but only on good driving songs) with no problems.

Good luck on yours.

Great info!!! I'm having the same issue (2003 Jaguar STR). Can you tell me how to make that fix and talk to me like I'm a 3 year old. I'm not super mechanical
