Default ran car on low coolant hot fumes from under the hood

hello,
I am yet to pay for this jaguar x type 2002, I drove it home because i wanted to get the car inspected by a professional for which i couldnt find one i convinced the owner to let me drive to my town about 40 miles from his to get the inspection done. But then the car was unused for a while and low on coolant the engine overheated i might have noticed it a bit late but before it broke down. Is it still okay for me to buy this car could it be just low coolant, I also want to know if i could have damaged the car. If i want to buy this one what should i check for before buying it. The car hass only 6200 very impressive carfax too.

Ramsey, the first check I would do is to open the coolant bottle and see if you spot any "black dots" floating in the coolant. If you see "black dots", then the head gasket was damaged and you are pushing oil into the coolant. The next check I would do is to start up the car from it being cold and see if you spot any "white smoke" (aka, steam) coming out of the car. A little is normal and it should be very whispy and minimal as this is simply the water that has collected inside the exhaust evaporating away. If it looks like a car on a cold wintery day, then again, the head gasket was damaged and it is blowing coolant into the exhaust.

Beyond that, it is hard to say if you really hurt anything or not. If you saw the temp gauge starting to go up and you turned the car off, then all is good. If you saw the temp gauge hit "H" and you kept going, anything more than a minute or so and damage is possible (the longer the drive, the chance of damage goes up exponentially).
