Rear electric window only moving in increments
So I just encountered this strange issue today.
I put down the rear window (from the driver's seat control) and when I tried to put it up again it only moved up about 2cm. So then I tried it from the door's own control and it wouldn't go up, but it would go down,
I kept trying, and after about a minute it moved up another 2-3cm.
Then nothing for another minute while I was repeatedly trying both buttons, driver's and the button on the problem window.
Then it eventually moved up another bit, another minute, another bit, until I finally got it all the way up.
There doesn't seem to be an issue with the motor when it actually moves, but it seems more like the controls are just flat-out turned off for close to a minute, and then turned back on again, but only with this one window.
It doesn't seem random, it was almost like I could predict it and know when it was going to work again.
Anyone know what's going on here?
I recently had to get a key cut, and I went cheap and just got a bare key without the remote, which somehow set off the alarm a few minutes before this, because the car wasn't "fully unlocked" after I unlocked it with the key. Could this have something to do with it?
Some kind of weird glitch?
I really don't think it's stuck, or a dodgy motor, because it seems too consistent, and it's not groaning or slowing down or anything.

I just changed the motor on my recent acquisition for the same problem following advice on a video on the bing video search using the query 'how to jaguar x type'. I paid about £16 for the motor, be aware that some of the door panel clips will break as you remove the panel, again very cheap on ebay.
I know that's not a 'work the problem out ' fix but used parts are currently available easily, I read that you can try to reset it too - by maintaining pressure on the button for 3 seconds after reaching the lower stop but that didn't work for me.
Good luck.

Thanks, I might look into a new motor, it's nice to know they're so cheap. But I think I'll probably check to see if there's power going to it first, and maybe check the controls just to be sure.
But yea, I have some spare clips lying around alright, I got a pack past year to fix my loose driver door card.
I did also have a similar issue earlier this year with my boot not opening. I initially thought the motor was bad because, it would partly activate, and then it would "fade" and not work at all for a few minutes, then it would work a little after a few minutes again. Turns out it was a partly broken wire where the harness goes from the car to the boot.
But this seems to be more like an on/off problem.
Was your one acting like this?

I forgot about this kind of "safety feature" concept, and it does seem more like this, than a dying motor.
So, after doing some checks, the most obvious one being that I plugged the suspect motor into the other passenger door connector (and it still moved in increments), I went and bought a used motor from eBay, fitted it, and it solved the problem.
I'm guessing the pressure sensor in the motor was faulty.
