Default Rear Trailing Arm Crack

Hi: During install of new rotors and pads in rear of my 02 x type, a crack in the lower portion of the right trailing arm was noticed. Can this be welded? Has anybody else had one of these fail? I do not recall driving over any boulders, but previous owner could have I suppose. When accelerating out of hard left turn, there is a weird noise from that right rear quarter of the car and I am concerned the thing could break in two. The thing itself is around $300 plus a couple hours to put it in. Just asking who if anyone has experienced this. Search on here came up with nothing. Thank you. --Tom in Tucson

Tom, there is nothing special about the metal used there. So, a local welding shop should be able to hook you up and get it welded up in no time flat. Probably cost you about an hour of time as they are going to want to grind out some of the metal so they can get to good metal and actually round out the point of the crack so it stops propagating. But, should be out the door for around $100 or less.

I was able to get the arm welded. A local hot rod shop where I had my rear seat panels cut open to get at my fuel pumps was happy to raise the car up and fix it. He used a big pry bar to realign the bent part of the arm and then secured it. Total cost of that was a big fat $45 so thank you for encouraging me to proceed. The only noises now are from the cheap plastic parts of the dashboard and door panels rubbing on each other. Now if I could find a way to secure all those...
