Default Rear window not working 05 XType

Driving home from lunch put down passenger rear window I hear this terrible crackling sound, and the window doesnt go up or down

If I use the switch, I can hear the motor though

I managed to get it up almost all the way buy inching it up by hand but it wont go up all the way - its almost an inch from being all the way closed
and it wont stay in the position

I'm going to go outside and tape the window so no water/air goes in the car

possibly a gear or something got stripped?

HELP

pnyklr, sounds like to me that the window mechanism bit the dust. The window is driven by a cable. Sounds like either the cable is binding or the gears on the end of the cable gave way. Either way, you are looking at a new cable assembly. You can confirm this by pulling off the door trim on the inside and looking at the mechanism. I think you are going to find this will be pretty obvious of a problem.

Thermo thanks for the help I looked online for the parts - is it a simple fix or do I have to replace the one piece it seems like covers the whole thing

I'm going to assume its #5 I need to replace?

Actually chris, I think Thermo may be talking about part 4 being the cable mechanism. If you're careful, it seems like #5 can just stay where it is...

I got that picture from a search on trademotion jaguar

they show #4 as the mechanism for a manual window
and #5 as the mechanism for an electric window
