Has anyone done this at home? any advice?

My starter has started to act up, not always engaging, I want to take it out and see if I can fix it up with some cleaning up and re-lubeing of the pinion assembly.

 

Stick shift or automatic? The manual trans cars are easy to remove, no trans mount in the way. Disconnect battery, disconnect main power cable and signal wire from starter, remove 2 13mm bolts to remove. The manual trans starters act up more than autos due to clutch dust getting inthe gear and shaft. Cleaning would be a good idea on a manual. If it's an auto you need to support the trans with a floor jack or other suitable support so you can remove the trans mount support brace. The brace is bolted to the mount with a 24mm nut and then 1 13mm goes into the bellhousing and the other 13mm is actually one of the starter bolts. Of course disconnect battery and cables just like a manual trans car before beggining.

 

Awesome.... Mine is a 5 speed so looks like an easier job, along with some hope of fixing the problem.
