Default Replacing the headliner.

I'm looking to replace my headliner in my 2004 Jag X-Type 3.0 awd. Does anyone have instructions / hints on how to remove the headliner. I can put the new headliner fabric in just needing help removing it.

Go to your model's sub-forum & search as that's a highly covered procedure here.

X-Type ( X400 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Good luck.

frontrunning,

I've moved your question from New Member Area - Intro a MUST to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

frontrunning, yes, you can remove the headliner from your car to get it redone. With that being said, having a second person will be handy (granted, I did it by myself). You will start off with removing everything touching the headliner except for the B pillar covers (they don't come off easy and you can pull the headliner around them and it will also be a nice holder later when you go to put it back in). You will then need to slide the front seats as far forward as you can and then lay them all the way back. You will then be able to roll the headliner some (forget if you have to rotate it inside the car some too, I want to say that you do) and this will allow you to slide it out the rear door. Just be careful not to bend it too far as it may leave a crease in the fiberglass support on the underside of the headliner.

The big thing is when you go to put it back, make sure that the headliner is centered on the sunroof. If it isn't, you may find that the headliner will want to pop out from under the rubber trim that is on the inside of the sunroof.

Default removing the headline.

thermo,

thanks for the headliner info but do you have any directions of where any screws / clips are that hold the headliner fiberglass in? I'm not seeing any screws / clips to even start on in removing it.

Kind regards,

Gary

I did mine fairly recently; so I'll proceed by foggy memory! My car does not have a sunroof, which I'm sure made it easier. The forward (A)pillars are retained by a central clip facing towards the center of the car; it snaps out. I looked for pillars on ebay to see what they looked like; very helpful. There's a funny little rubber strap at the top of the pillar also. You can unhook it once the clip is loose. The upper console just pulls down straight from the rear. The plastic fitting above it clips into the roof on either side; I dislodged one of the clips to get the wiring harness around it. Once you pry off the little covers with a screwdriver, you can access the three torx screws that hold the sun visors. I actually brought my board to the upholsterer with the mirrors dangling, so I didn't have to worry about disconnecting the wires, which run through the mounting stalk for the visor. It'll make sense when you see it. I left the wiring attached to the board. You need to disconnect the terminal housings that run along both windshield pillars; there's a few clips that hold the harness along the pillar, which I broke pulling the harness off (on purpose, I work for a BRP dealership and have nearly identical retainers). I removed the B pillars in my car, but they're a pain and probably not necessary. And nobody else that I read mentioned it, but there is another clip just forward of the central brake light holding the board up. I didn't know what was up there, and I just gave it a good yank and the board came out. I might have been lucky there! It just pulls out vertically also, which is a bit tough. After that, you just need to peel the rubber moulding from around the board, and it should be loose. Then adjust the seats as noted and pull it out through a rear door. It's a tight squeeze; not a good time to get angry and yank on it! I did my board by myself, after getting as much info as I could from this forum; and it actually wasn't too bad. Waaaaaay better than having the headliner drooped on your head! Good luck.

frontrunning, from my memory, there are no clips that hold the headliner in place. It is all the other stuff that holds it up there. Like with the C and A pillar covers, they are just held in place by friction clips. Just be careful if you start using a screw driver to pry stuff apart as there are airbags behind the A pillars (near the top) and you don't want to puncture one of the assemblies. Another tidbit about the pillar covers, they have retaining straps associated with them. So, you will be able to get them loose, but they are not going to come all the way free until you undo the end of the retaining strap (slip clip as I recall).

As you start removing the dome lights and pillar covers, you will see where the headliner is coming loose and where you may have a fastener or two still holding things in place.

Oh, I'm going to add one more note: the edge of the board is very sharp; I gave myself paper cuts across all four fingers on one hand when I slipped across it.

Thermo & geoffbp58 thank you both for all of the great guidance. I am searching now for a fabric shop that will hopefully have a color close to what is currently in. Again thank you both for your replies.

Does anyone have a particular site to order the headliner material from? My 2004 Jag Xtype 3.0 with sunroof and 4 pillars has the tan material. The color of my car is Topaz with Tan Interior.

Default Replacing the headliner

I got the fabric from WLS headliners. and even spoke to a human there about the exact instructions. Needed 3 cans of adhesive for my XJ8L, bought at local auto parts store after calling to compare prices. 3 cans cost 50% of headliner fabric. If you have a sunroof, MAKE SURE you don't trim the fabric too close to the opening on the fiberglass liner. LEAVE PLENTY EXTRA. Can you tell I trimmed mine too close? It looks awesome, and it looks great, except if you're sitting in the back seat and you can see the edges of the fabric showing.
I will do it over with new fabric this spring, just to erase that one nagging mistake.

Default Replaced headliner

I'm a wimp and had mine replaced by a mobile headliner replacement specialist. It has the same grey color and fuzzy texture as the original. He came to my house while I was at work and only charged me $250 with a 3-year warranty. He did an excellent job and I'm very happy. The next best price in the Tampa area that I could find was about $400 and required a drop-off at the shop.

Pacobell,

Wow if I could get a $250 quote I would be sold on having it done. I'm getting quoted $450 with droppng off. I picked up the headliner material for $55 at my local Pepboys and I figure 3 cans of adhesive will run me round $20, throw in a 1/2 a Saturday and some cold beers and with all the feedback I'm getting it should be done.

From experience I can tell you to get the 3M Super 77 adhesive spray. It's pricey but worth it. That is unless you like taking your headliner out to repair sagging fabric.

I need my headliner replaced but I cannot find any mobile service here in the Dallas area. Is there anyone on the forum who has had any upholstery work done in Dallas and can recommend a repair shop? I am pretty sure I don't want Park Place to do it! $$$$$

Thanks

Made an appointment for next week with Headliner Magic in Garland. Takes 2 hours or so and they do it while you wait. Got good reviews including one from a guy that has a Jag. $450 total if I pay cash. One year guarantee for what that is worth.

I have no options right now, I am in a temporary situation between homes and all of my tools are packed up and I don't have a good place to work on the car so this seems like the best alternative. I will let you guys know how it comes out.

Any luck? I just had my engine rebuilt and the car was left outside for a while in the texas heat. Now the sunroof fabric is drooping. I had the main headliner replaced a few years ago, and I should have paid another hundred for the pillars and the sunroof, but I channeled my dad and went low cost..lol..

Now, I need to replace the sunroof and pillars ... hoping to find a shop near Plano.

Cherry_560SEL: As best I can tell the guys at Headliner Magic did a good job. It took them about 2 1/4 hours and I waited in the lobby. They have free Netflix but I just took my iPad and hung out. They did the headliner and the sun roof both for $450. The sunroof is considered part of the deal. I suspect they will do the sunroof separate and I know they will do the pillars. I talked to them about it because a few years ago I bought new A pillars from Park Place (mine were coming unglued up near the windshield) and replaced them myself. I mentioned that to the tech and he said they could have replaced it for me and saved me some money.

I would just give them a call and see what they say, they are pretty nice guys. They had a wrapped van sitting outside the front door so maybe they will come to you for a small job like that? They are just north of LBJ, on Miller Road I think it is, in Garland. They give a one year guarantee for what it is worth. As far as I could tell there is no place in Plano and not all that many in town. This is pretty much all these guys do.

Good luck.
