Hey guys have any of you gotten rid of your resonator?

I have MagnaFlow mufflers right now but I think I want it a little but louder.

 

I realized that you have not had your question answered, but it has been viewed many times. I remember seeing a post somewhere of a member who removed the exhaust resonator and intake resonator and was talking about the results. I don't remember if it was on the us or eu forum though. I do remember however that this has been discussed before and if you look for a little bit you should be able to find it. Hope that helps.

 

I'm running a Mina setup and have been thinking of doing the same thing this coming spring. I'm wondering just what the sound would be also. I'm thinking they wouldn't be too loud since the cats would still be in the system.

 

Hey guys, what are your experiences from resonator deletes on the 3.0s?

I have a louder axleback exhaust system on right now, but I think it could just be a little bit louder. I was thinking deleted the resonator would give it just the right sound.

Has anyone done it?

 

ex53436, yes, you can do it. The one thing that I will caution you on is since you have already gone to a more free flowing exhaust, by removing the resonator, you may lower the backpressure too much and it will affect the low end power that the 3.0L has. It will be fine for the highway, but in town, you may find that the engine will lack a little bit compared to what it has now. Once you get the car wound up, then it will go. But, the trick is, getting the motor wound up in the first place.

The amount of power loss you can expect is hard to say since this will be affected by the aftermarket mufflers you had installed and if you went with larger pipes anywhere. It is all a balancing game.

 

Hmm, that sounds like something to think about. The MagnaFlow mufflers that are on right now just give it a bit of a deep drone, but isn't very noticeable, even for me sometimes.

Has anyone on this forum done it? I'm really curious to hear the sound of it.

Don't do it, doesn't sounds good. You will loose too much back pressure which will slow down the car. These cars are not rockets so anything that will loose power should be avoided IMHO.

 

Not yet, thinking about doing it this spring. We're in the Philippines for the winter so the cat is taking a rest locked up in the garage. If I do it and don't like the sound I can always weld the resonator back in. I've got the Mina exhaust on now, it sounds ok but would like a little more growl.

 

Oh ok. I'll probably be doing removing them soon. When I do, I'll try to post a video of the sound. Although, I have a different exhaust setup.

 

I wouldn't recommend simply removing the resonator - my experience with Duratec engines is they have a horrible, tinny, ricy-sounding resonation at higher rpm. It doesn't sound flattering at all. My advice is if you want a better sounding cat upgrade the intake to a higher-flowing open style design and replace the resonator with a higher quality one such as Dynomax, Flowmaster or Borla. Replacing the headers with Taurus spec headers (i.e. removing the cats) will go a long way to increasing the growl.

I think any decent aftermarket resonator would work fairly well for you. Unfortunately my favorite company went out of business so I can't recommend what I'd like. I had a Brullen catback on my SVT Contour and it was a very aggressive exhaust note without sounding ricy at all.
My recommendation is to try out a few different types to get the sound you want. Remember, changes on the intake side will also greatly affect the sound on the exhaust side. Look around for some inexpensive options - there's a bunch out there. Mandrelexhaustsystems.com, burnsstainless.com, etc. You could even try a Jegs or Summit Racing brand for cheap!

 

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'm probably going to just get it removed first, and then if I don't like it, I'll work from there. I hope with the rumble of the resonator gone plus the magnaflow mufflers it will kind of balance out and sound like a growl.

Have you seen any videos or sound clips of anything similar? I can't seem to find any, but I'm sure people have done it.

 

I think that's a good plan.
I would just do searches on the SVT Contour sound clips on youtube - that's going to have the closest engine sound. Only difference will be the IMRC's opening up around 3500 RPM (at least that's where I think they opened, I haven't had one in years).

I wouldn't remove the resonator completely cause it will be much to loud among other things, go with a glasspack or other manufacture higher flowing resonator if u want a good result, we removed res on my buddy's a4 2.8 and was obnoxious and raspy, he also had a sport muffler on.

 

Alright guys, I went through with the removal of the resonator and overall, I'm really pleased with the result.

Overall, all the sound that I had from the MagnaFlow mufflers has been amplified a bit, plus it added a little bit of rasp too. I'll try to convert a sound clip now so I can upload it.
