Reverse Gear Fix?

Hello, I am looking at buying a 2002 x-type 3.0. It is in very good condition and is a great price that i cant pass up, The only problem is it wont move in reverse. From what i read in the forums and by the way the other gears work perfectly fine i dont believe the transmission itself is going, i believe the reverse gear band has slipped. I dont know if someone removed the bolt causing the band to come loose or if it broke itself.

Anyway my question is, what is the best way to fix the band? Do i need to completely remove the trans? or can i access it by removing the pan?. I did read that someone was able to fix it through the bolt hole by fabricating some small pieces and resealing holes and the bolt when finnished, but he didnt give enough detail for me to try that on my own.

Any help is appreciated.

From what you are describing, the band has completely let go or the reverse solenoid is toast. Unfortunately, the only way to fix this is to open up the tranny and see what you see. If it is just a solenoid issue, the tranny can remain installed and you will be out the door for fairly cheap. If it is a band that has gone, plan on spending another $1000-2000 to have them pull the tranny and do the necessary work.

You may get lucky and the fix will be simple. But, normally with a problem like you are describing, plan on putting down some good money to get it fixed.

I don't want to sound negative, but sometimes reality is what it is. HOpefully you got the car for a steal and this will not be that big of a thing in the big picture.
