Yes, that's what the "S" stands for : Show.

Seriously, this is the Sport Mode button. It makes your automatic transmission shift at a higher RPM. If your light does not turn on anymore, it may be a sign that there is a problem with your car that prevents Sport Mode from functionning correctly, and not simply that the light needs to be replaced.

Use the forum search engine, I believe I recall someone having similar trouble not too long ago.

bump.....

my 05 x-type had an issue where the battery went dead last week. The check engine light came on so I took the car in and had the codes read. it was p1603 (i think). that meant the battery was disconnected while the motor was running. (i think)

Now the sport button will not work. This drives me nuts because I always drive in "S" mode. I no longer have a check engine light but the button will not put the car in sport mode!

what should I do? what do I check?

It definitely makes a difference on my 2.5, but its not worth beating on it like that. On the freeway when im in S mode it literally takes it to 7k redline and takes quite some time for that final shift with no real power behind it. I find that the car scoots along much better with it off because for it to be effective you have to have your foot to the floor.

UPDATE; I noticed the car was cranking a little longer then it used to before the engine would kick over and start. I replaced the battery and this fixed my "S" button issue. I guess the car tripped into some sort of "safe" mode. this might help others with the same issue.
