Default Sealed Transmission Issues?

Hi, all!

I'm new here, but I don't have a Jaguar...yet. I'm seriously considering one right now. A 2007 X-Type, Jaguar Racing Green w/ Champagne interior.

I apologize if this is something that's been covered in detail before.

I heard that the sealed transmission could be an issue. Is this true? If so, when (miles) does it typically seem to begin?

Thanks!

It isn't if you buy a manual tranny Seriously, the tranny, like any awd automatic tranny suffers from excessive heat and therefore quicker degradation of atf (consistant fluid changes once it reaches its flash point are a must). Of course the car industry thinks your too dumb (along with every other driver) to judge for themselves when your fluid has gotten too hot and needs changed to put a real tranny temp gauge in there so personally I wouldn't buy an auto tranny awd vehicle whether it was made by Honda or Yugo if it didn't have the tranny fluid changed every 20-30k regardless of how nice it looked or I was paying a price less then current market value less the cost of a new tranny.

Other issue with the tranny would be same wear of al 4 MATCHING tread patterne tires. If not shop elsewhere and then there is the tranfer fluid on the X type and fairly weak transfer case..

I have seen in some other threads about the manual transmission being more reliable, but am wondering why that is. Certainly glad to hear it, as I have a manual, but could someone eduacate me why that is versus an auto?

Because the auto has a computer, a bunch of sensors (5) and a bunch of solenoids (9) and one of these may not work at any time. Too complex!

Default Tranny

Lets put it this way, this is my first experience with Jaguar. A 2004 xtype awd automatic, nobody tells you to change the tranny fluid, so of course mine burned up at 42000 miles. I got it with 3000miles and dont race the car, for I am 50 not 20. I got really pissed off because of it was out of warranty on time. Of course the tranny shop told me that you do need to change the fluid every 30000 and its an inherent problem with the car and Jaguar has been aware of it for quite a while, never sending owners any kind of notification. Also now I occasionally get the DCS fault message, but luckily I did have the foresight and bought a warranty about a month before the tranny blew,(thank god) for small favors. Factory Ford warranty costs megabucks less than a Jag tranny!

Its good to keep up on the fluid changes. Not too long ago I changed the fluid in the transfer case and diff. And a few months before I changed the fluid in the trans(manual). My X has 57k miles on it, 2004 2.5/manual trans..

Maybe you can answer my question as you sound quite knowledgeable. I heard that by having different tire patterns on the front and rear of an auto xtype, it will burn up the transfer case. Do you know if this is true as i just replaced just my front tires and have different rear tires on now. Would appreciate any help.

I run all 4 of the same tires on my X. People say that you need to with the AWD, otherwise it will fail over time. Other say that it really wont affect the AWD system if you use 2 different tires on the front/back.. I play it safe though since the transfer case is a weak part on the X's and $$$$$ to fix.

Tire CIRCUMFERENCE is probably the main issue. On slippery surfaces different tire patterns may result in loading the Xfer case. The Xfer case is basically a limited slip differential between the front and back axles. It has clutches and constant slipping will probably cause heat and failure. Four identical tires is the best answer.

Oh wow. I had a 1996 Chrysler Town and Country with more transmission problems than Carter has liver pills. One reason I bought this car is that Consumer Reports rated the engine and the transmission top notch. The dealer said the transmission fluid never has to be changed because it's sealed. So.... should I get the fluid changed or leave it alone. It has about 75,000 miles on it at six years old.

Yes I would change it. I did my transmission, transfer case and rear diff with all new fluids.

Thank you! I'll see about getting that done as soon as I can. I really love this car. I put about 200,000 miles on that Chrysler in twelve years, rebuilt the transmission and then wore it completely out. Nothing worked but the radio when I finally junked it. I want my Jag to last!
