Servicing Jaguar X-Type 2004, Help don't want to be ripped off.
Im young and stupid and need help with this.
I am in the next week or to getting the car serviced (Jag xtype 2004, sport), and by serviced I mean oil and filter change, alignment (because the wheel shake violently at 60 mph *hope this fixes it*)etc. The basics.
The car has 132k on it, I have no idea what oil to put in it.
I usually get it done at AAA for like $35 but they dont use synthetic and one time at fire stone (never again) for like $65. FS sat there and lied to me and told me it cost more because the car took 9 qts. I know it takes 6. They were being really sexist. ANYWAYS.
I was thinking high mileage oil but idk what brand etc., since I want to buy it myself instead of buying it from where I am getting it serviced. Any suggestions and where to buy it from so I don't have to sign away my first born?
Thanks!
-------------
Amongst other things, the car always goes into limp and bucks in the rain motor and tranny lights come on. I am assuming this is an electrical issue with the fuel pump? What does that usually cost, parts and labor separated?
Also my ac never really gets cold, if it does it'll take like 15 minuets and only last for several seconds, but heat works fine...Do i need a thermometer?

Love It, when it comes to oil, you are going to find many different lines of recommendations when it comes to oils. Big things I would say is since you have little understanding of automobiles, KISS (Keep It Simple.....). Your car can run on either 5W-30 or 5W-20 oil. Because you are down in NC, you can use either this time of year as the weather doesn't get that cold for you. As for using full synthetic, a blend, or standard oil, that is a personal preference thing. If you feel better running full synthetic, then run it. But, it is also going to cost you more. As for getting more protection, this is a source for debate. Hence why I say if it makes you feel better getting the more expensive oil, then do so. As for brands, all oils that are made these days meet the requirements for your car. Just stick with a brand name like Havoline, Quaker, Valvoline, etc. Try to avoid the auto parts store brand or something like that. Not saying that the oils are inferior, but brand names have a little bit more quality control to them.
As for filters, stick with either Motorcraft or Fram or K&N. THese seem to have done other members good over time.
As for your rain issue, have your local mechanic take a look at the "Engine COntrol Unit" (aka, the computer that controls the engine). It is located under the black plastic cover (cowl) just in front of the windshield on the passenger side. What happens is water runs down the windshield, on to the computer and the water will get into the plug and short out some of the wires. A little bit of dielectric grease will fix your issue. Should be less than $100 for that service.

Castrol
Oil specification -API
SL/EC and ILSAC GF-3
love it-- thermo is very good and knowledgable and gives good advice. Oil over the standard spec is ALL personal perference, like I use Moble 1 and Bosch filters, it's what ever you feel comfortable with. It costs me $45.00/50.00 to do it myself.I run it for 5 to 7 thousand miles( my comfort zone), some go 10,000. I don't use Fram because they are glued and not crimped and and had one leak , they are made by Honeywell a defense company. What ever clicks your clock.

A+ Friends don't let friends use FRAM
You really going to post for help and then shove it in the guy's face who has posted thousands of times on this forum? You said it, "young and stupid".

I will keep my suggestions to myself.
Hi Rena,
I keep my eye on the Kmart ads, sometimes they run sales on the Castrol one-gallon jugs. As JagXster mentioned, it is one specified in the handbook and manual for the car.
Last time I picked up a few gallons, the sale price was about $15. When I went back a few days later, it was back up to $26, so the saving can be significant. BP (British Petroleum) manufactures it, so hopefully some of those dollars are going back to the folks effected by the gulf oil spill.
I buy my oil filters at the local NAPA store, and get their top 'o the line filter (made by WIX, here in the US). They exceed the Jaguar specifications. Do NOT buy your oil filter from any kind of discount store, they are a major item that counterfiters sneak into the country.
My wife would tell you that boyfriends are a dime a dozen, but one that is a good mechanic is rare. If you find a boyfriend that loves your X-Type as much as he loves you, and knows his way around a garage - you're on the right track!
Best of luck!

You were given good sound advice by a veteran member here, well known for his expertise and you choose to ignore it, which is fine, your choice.
If you're looking for help and advice I honestly believe you may struggle, good luck here with that attitude.
I said thank you, it was very kind of them for the input it just wasnt what I was looking for answer wise.
I didn't insult him, so you should insult me.

Haha thanks, I actually know more about cars than my boyfriend does. In all honestly I dont think he knows how to change his own oil.
He also is a avid Jaguar hater(he loves his BMW more than me), along with my moms friend who owns a tranny shop who refuses to work on it.
So yeah, I will deff look for sales because I know synthetics can get pricey.

Loveit.....I have to agree with the above comments and more I'm afraid.

I believe it is some of you who seem to have attitudes and do not like the idea of younger people with a car such as a jaguar.
And thats fine, I came for a answer I got it. I am actually quite tired of this forums snob-tastic idiocracies.
Now there's a attitude.
Anyways thanks for the help. And I am sorry for offending everyone when it wasn't my intentions, just everyone's wrong perceptions.
Love It, relax, I did not take any offense to what you said. I purposely left it vague because we have had numerous disagreements over what is the better oil and what the better filter is. I tend to use either Havoline or Quaker. But then, I have used some of the others too. I can not say that I have seen any differences between the oils in the short term. As for the filters, you just need to make sure you get an oil filter with the silicon check valve in it so the motor remains filled with oil.
If you want information on which oil is best, a resource that I will direct you over to is here: - Bob is the Oil Guy. This guy does his own research at his own cost and has training in this field. He gives real world explanations and results of what he finds. He calls a spade a spade. From there, you can decide what is good, better, and best and go from there.

LoveIt: Thermo is one of the best when it comes to the Kitty. he has helped me a number of times and imagine all of his solutuions he gave me through this site without physically looking at the car.
i use Castrol 5W-30 full sythenstic, i live in OH it gets cold.
For the shaking wheel, i believe it's more to do with wheel balancing not alignment. it's also possible that you have bad tyre(s).

Love It - I also own a 04 sport and I tend to use a blend vs regular or full synthetic. In my opinion oil can do a lot for a car, but at 132K it can only do so much. You also have to consider what the previous owner used. If you aren't sure I would stick with a blend (best of both worlds), but if you know the previous owner used either regular or full synthetic I would go with that.
As for the tire shaking check to make sure all your tires are the same size, have even tread, and are in overall good condition. If not your tires may be a good starting point.
Best of luck.

LoveIt, as for the wheel shake, get an alignment done first. Lets see what you have at that point. My car develops a shake in the steering wheel the faster I go and after getting an alignment, the shaking stops. Our cars are very touchy when it comes to the front end alignment. If the front wheels are not exactly parallel to each other, they will crab down the road and it will cause the steering wheel to shake pretty good and lead to very rapid tire wear (check the inside edge of your front tires for excessive wear, that is where you will see it if you have an issue).
i've used walmart full synthetic in all my cars for about 8 yrs...it's much cheaper than all the brand names and ranked higher than most in the consumer report mag (like thats a real recommendation...lol)
I've used fram filters in the past without a problem, but as i heard they are not much good i switched to wix (available at napa)
For air filters i would use K & N...expensive but worth it. IMO.
Enjoy the cat...dump the b/f...people that don't love jags are quite obviously insane :+)

love it....Thermo wasn't offended; he's a pro and a gentleman, but some of us might have felt a little put off by your comments because he has alot of experience and he has helped NUMEROUS people on this forum. He goes out of his way to help as much as he can no matter who you are, how old you are, or whatever...it doesn't matter. Just the kind of guy he is.
I use Castrol 5w30 if it matters and I agree regarding the wheel issue. Check the tires and get an alignment....

Loveit, also have your wheels balanced. I see you have the Sport model and if you have the 17s and especially if you have 18s with lower profile tires you could have a bent wheel(s). I have the 18" Arubas on my car and have had two bent wheels so far. Have the suspension checked as wheel. After 132k miles something could be worn.
