Default Severe manual transmission leak

My 2002 X-Type 3.0l manual transmission has a severe fluid leak I'm struggling to figure out. I can top it up and it seems fine and no immediate leak, but as soon as I drive the car it leaks badly (a visible drip coming down the side of the transmission). It's not coming from the output shafts and the inside of the bell housing seems dry. The area where the shift mechanism goes into the trans looks a bit wet but it's so high compared to the fluid level can't imagine that being the source of a major leak. I'm not sure where else it could leak from, but whatever it is it's obscured from sight from both the top and bottom. Anyone heard of this before as a know issue on the manual transmission or have any other ideas?
