Should I buy???
Hello all,
I have a 2001 XJ8 that I love and will have until it goes to its grave. I have had excellent luck with this Jaguar and I am very pleased.
Now I have found a 2004 X type AWD with 39K miles for 11k. It looks like a "mini me" of my xj and looks like it just came out of the showroom.
Do you think this would be a good daily driver for my wife? She has a 35 mile round trip to work and is curently in a 09 Tahoe Hybrid which I would love to only use for hauling, trailering and such. She really is tired of driving such a big vehicle daily and she keeps eying my XJ for a possible switch.
I have heard alot of negatives and my mechanic is not crazy about them but reading the X type forum it really doens't seem all that bad to me and I really like the car and would feel it is a safer smaller alternative.
Thanks for any input!

I liked the X type so much I got a XJR for my wife who prefers the X type so I get stuck with the R. It is a very solid car not really similar to the XJs in driving dynamics. I'm assuming it is an auto right? If so have your mechanic go over the tranny before making the decision. Transfer case is also an issue. Earlier ones seem to have more issues then post 04s. Depending on what your towing you might even be able to delete the Tahoe entirely. Mine has no issues with up to 2000lbs even at 85 mph on the dc beltway. Price seems a little on the high side but definately in the right ballpark. If you haven't done so look at the FAQ, do a tranny, rear suspension, carrier bearing and transfer case search and have all these things looked over good. Be prepared to change the fluids all around almost immediately. Also, simply walk away if the tires aren't matching with similar tread.

The 04 and newer X's seem to have the bugs worked out from the previous 02-03 yrs. I have an 04 X that I purchased with 19k miles and now has 64k miles(5yrs owned) and I have not had to do any major work to it. I always keep up with the maintenance and running excellent.
I would say go for it and take care of it like you did your XJ..

I would echo the sentiments of the previous posters...it seems that Xes from 2004 onward seem to have fewer issues. I would discourage folks from buying previous year models. Though, like all cars you never know...for instance, I just had to replace the oil pan gasket on my 2005 (with 49K miles on it) to the tune of $900. I'm fortunate enough to be able to pay for repairs like that, but please do plenty of research before making your final decision. And good luck to you!

I say go for it. You will find two types of mechanics for this car... One kind that will say oh its a Jaguar, I don't work with those cars they are too much trouble. Or you will find a mechanic that will say Sure, I work on Jaguars. When you take it in they will probably tell you how beautiful Jaguar cars are. Trust me, it has happened to me at least a dozen times.
