Should I get 04 X-Type or 05 A4 convertible?
Hi, I'm looking at an 04 x type tomorrow for 3900. I am new to Florida and no mechanic to help out... I'm in school with limited funds. The car has 110k .... Do you think it's a good buy or should I expect thousands of maintenance costs too?
Welcome to the forum Sasha,
I've moved your question from Off Topic to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to offer advice. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

How many miles does the A4 have, and how much does it cost? In most cases machines are machines, and the less wear on components is always something to look at. On the flip side, the A4 rag top is not a cheap maintenance or replacement item, and I think the A4....at least they used to, has a timing belt, as opposed to a timing chain, in the X Type. What condition are both cars in, as in list what doesn't work? On the other hand there is the exclusivity of a Jaguar, over a bushel load of Audis....I need a little more info, to help out with the decision.......Mike
If I was still in school and had limited funds I wouldn't buy any 10+ year old high end car. All cars need repairs. Old cars need more than new. Repairs on high end cars cost twice as much if not more.
What Mikey Said!!!! I hadn't had my coffee yet......Buy a low mileage domestic, and when you become a professional after college, and really want to **** off the wife, put your favorite car in the garage....A JAG OF COURSE!!....If she doesn't like it, things will pass, or she will, and you can get a younger model.....Be cool.....Mike
If limited on funds and want luxury, go pre-loved Lexus. Similar price, vastly superior to your standard, ultra boring "normal" car when it comes to comfort, build quality, road noise, power, etc, and also extremely reliable, can be serviced by Toyota, and OEM parts as well as aftermarket tend to be easily accessible.
Lexus hold up REALLY well, assuming you stay away from older RX.
Just because you are limited on funds doesn't mean you have to drive boring, uncomfortable junk.
If you must have Jaguar or Audi, as a matter of preference, I'd aim for the X Type. They're easy to work on, actually pretty reliable assuming you replace all the fluids and go from there, and while no-one will notice your Audi, everyone will notice your Jag. Just a thought.

I used part of a student loan to buy a project 1974 firebird when I was law school in 1988. It needed paint and an interior. I had time to work on it then. It was fully restored by the time I graduated. Loved that car.
