4x4x4, it is possible that one of the spider gears in the rear end has bound up and is therefore causing the rear end to actually act like a locked rear end. A quick check that you can do is to lift the rear end of the car up in the air (need both tires off of the ground). Now, put the car into neutral and release the e-brake and then attempt to turn one of the rear tires (direction doesn't matter). Make sure the front tires are properly blocked so the car doesn't fall off the stands. What you are expecting to see is which ever way you turn the one tire, the one on the opposite side will spin the opposite way. If they both turn the same direction, then that would indicate that the spider gears are bound up. You may also not get any rotation from either tire since the front tires are on the ground still. This would also be indicative of a frozen spider gear.

Hope this helps. It can also be done for the front end, but that is a little less specific since you could also be looking at a problem in either the tranny or the transfer case.

Is it jumping or a knocking noise? If it's knocking on full lock it's likely to be the CV joint.

Yes, definitely CV joints, then check the driveshaft center bearing for possible failure (not grease) and then the u-joints, in that order. But, I'm putting my money on CVs.

Yes, this would also definitely happen if the tire treads were full of snow/ice (or tires are simply on top of snow/ice) and as a result losing some traction as they were turned to extreme angles.
