I have an 05 x-type, 3.0L automatic with 84,000 mi. I have very recently developed a slight shudder when I accelerate from a stop. It feels like it's coming from the right rear side. It also seems more pronounced when I accelerate softly.

My initial thought is the differential. Has anyone had a similar experience or know if this is common?

 

So it's a shudder from the chassis and is not the engine coughing?

 

Yes, and only accelerating from a stop for the first few seconds. I don't feel or notice it as it accelerates thru 2nd gear on up, or when it downshifts to pass or accelerate on the highway.
