pegasus: Smoke is excess fuel(rich) and knocking is (without hearing it live) the injectors working very hard.Had a experience with that on a chev silverado, turned out to be a DIRTY fuel filter NOTHING else. If the computer has found a lean condition and is correcting it with longer pulses to the injectors causing them to HAMMER. When cold the excess fuel can't burn completely. Be careful with running it to long like this as it will plug up the converter unless you are traveling long distances after it's warm Also check to see that the engine is coming to operating temperature quickly.Remember the old cardboard in front of the radiator trick, don't do it.#1 I would replace the filter then see if things change and check the operating temp.. then if it doesn't have it scoped to see if the glow plugs are operating properly, run ONLY #1 filtered fuel. Good luck!
