Default Spluttering misfire and warm start problem

Hi

I have two seemingly unrelated problems with my 2006 X-Type 2.0d SE Estate, but am posting them together in case they are related in some way!

Misfire - the engine stutters and misfires when cruising along (i.e. the engine is not under any load). This happens regardless of gear selection or road speed, but seems to be confined to engine speeds of between about 1,700 and 2,250 rpm. The engine stutters alarmingly for about 15 seconds, and then resumes as if nothing has happened. Applying some throttle also seems to terminate the spluttering. It is happening more and more frequently, and it is a bit of a worry since I'm driving the car to the French Alps in a couple of weeks. The car is due for a service (which it is having next Tuesday) at which it will have air, fuel and oil filters replaced, but if the problem is unrelated then I could do with being able to point my mechanic in the right direction.

Warm start problem - car starts from cold without problem. When hot, the engine starts, but won't run properly - the only thing I can compare it to is a petrol engine with pre-ignition (i.e. the engine running on when the ignition is switched off). If I keep the ignition key turned to the cranking position when the engine has fired, and then release it a second later, then the car starts and runs fine. Otherwise, the engine has to be turned off and restarted, sometimes several times, before it will start and rev normally.

Anyone got any clues?

Cheers,

Ian Frizell

Ian - Does the car need to cool before it will restart? You might have a bad intake manifold seal / gasket. Any engine codes?

The engine runs fine until it heats up, causing the expansion of the manifold to the cylinder heads. This lets in more air and not through the MAF which causes a problem. You give it more gas by pressing the throttle pedal - more gas for the more air coming in - runs better. When the engine cools, the manifold tightens up to the cylinder heads and the engine fires up.

If you have an engine light and the codes, post this 1st and someone can help diagnose the problem with more certainty

Sorry for slow response - been away for a few days.

It will restart while still hot, and runs smoothly if the ignition key is held in the cranking position for an extra second after the engine fires.

No codes displayed by the message centre. Car has actually been starting ok since the service last week.

The misfire was also much improved, but yesterday the engine spluttered whilst accelerating in 2nd gear, and the turbo seemed to cut out, the glow plug light came on and flashed constantly. Car remained drivable but felt like it was in limp home mode, although no codes displayed. Stopped the engine, and then restarted it - glow plug light went out, and the car drove normally again. This happened again this morning - most worrying! Do I need to take the car to a specialist to have it plugged into diagnostic equipment?

Here's a link to a forum page that might be "helpful".

Sounds like the first step was to check out the battery. Have the amperage checked out, not just the volts.

No codes being thrown is troubling. Maybe it is the battery.

I would repost this problem stating "turbo" and diesel" in the title. You'll get more responses from more knowledgable people.
