What all has to be changed when changing the steering column

I'm sorry for my novice mistakes on this forum... My jaguar is a 2002 x type, I have a column out of a yard and have its serial numbers also. My main issue is that the key would not toggle forward, upon examination I'm finding the problem is Not the tumblers but something inside the column itself. My thoughts at this point are it would be easier just to switch columns

 

Could it just be your key is worn? I can't say that I ever remember anyone changing their steering column. There have been posts about that in the past or that some graphite sprayed into the mechanism could help.

Maybe you could detail the issue you are having a bit better so that people on hear could better advise you. Like, when it started, was it all of a sudden or started happening gradually, what have you done so far to address it, what makes you think the whole steering column needs to be replaced. The more info you share the more likely it is someone could offer a solution before going to the extreme of changing the steering column.
