Hi guys and gals, hope someone can help.... I have 'steering wheel controls' the little wheels are tatty and need replacing. Anybody know if they can be replaced? If so how do you go about it? Don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance

 

Bob, yes, the switches can be replaced. Granted, it will probably be easier to simply replace the whole steering wheel. The general sequence of steps will be:

-disconnect battery (so you don't accidentally cause the airbags to go off)
-remove the 2 screws on the back side of the steering wheel so you can remove the airbag
-disconnect the plug to the airbag and set off to the side with the jaguar face facing up (not doing so, should the airbag deploy, it would cause the assembly to be tossed in the air and potentially cause unneeded injury/damage)
-undo the nut in the center of the steering wheel
-install the steering wheel puller and loosen the steering wheel from the shaft
-undo plugs for all the switches and horn.

That is the short of it. Not too difficult. Putting things back together is simply the reverse process.

One note, if you go with a new steering wheel, please note that there are 2 different styles of steering wheels out there. They are interchangeable. So, if you are looking just to replace the switches, you need to make sure you get the steering wheel with the same switches as what you have now.

 

The updated wheel doesn't have screws holding the airbag in, its held in with clips and you have to stick a flathead screwdriver in three slots on the back of the wheel, turning the wheel to get to them. Its also recommended that you leave the battery unplugged for about ten mins before you start. I didn't need a puller to removed my wheel, once I got the torque bit off, I think it was a t50 or t55,it just came right off.
