The airbag cover is properly fitted - although you may not think so. It does sit "proud" at the forward edge - you want to give it a good thump so that it is more flush, but don't do that.

When they were new they did not stick up like that. As they age the rubber deforms. The only fix is to get a new one and not one from a junk yard.

With respect - yes they did. All 3 of my X-Types were exactly the same in this regard - unless I have completely misunderstood the problem.

I too have had 3 X-Types, still have a 2007! I distinctly remember the rubber curling
up that way on my 2003 car. I think that it is temperature related; worse in hotter
climates. It has been discussed here before.

All early 04 and older X-Type air bag cover are same like that, my 03 is the same, even you order a new one from factory it might fit a little better and not much curled up like that, but it wouldn't look any better, find out if you can fit one from later 04 or newer MY, the cruise control and placement is difference, but hopeful it have the same wiring connector, try to get one from junk yard if it not work you won't wasted much money, if it worked you save some money.
