Default Sticking Dome/Map Light Switches

When I bought my used X Type, the passenger side map light switch button was stuck in the "On" position and would not work. After taking the dome/map light cover off, I discovered that the construction of the switch assembly is more Ford quality than Jaguar (In my opinion).

The three map/dome light buttons "semi-float" in the cover and are attached to the body of the cover on the rear side of the button using thin flexible plastic strips that are welded onto the button and the cover piece.

The proper operation of each lamp depends on a small post extruding from the bottom of each button striking a small micro-switch above it on an IC board attached to the cover (see photo). There are also small pieces of sponge placed between the buttons to help keep the posts aligned with the micro-switches.

At first, I thought the passenger side sponge had worn and I could simply replace the sponge. But after further investigation, I discovered that the thin flexible attachment strip had broken off the button and now the button completely floats in the housing and will not keep alignment between the post and micro-switch.

It may be possible to "Super Glue" the button post to the micro-switch landing area, but since the button can still basically float in the housing and the center button uses the buttons on each side to help keep it aligned, the center switch can get out of alignment.

I was pretty sure that I would have to buy an entire dome assembly before I started, but wanted to see exactly what the problem was first.

Based on what I have seen of the dome module construction, you can pretty well bet that you will have to replace the entire module for anything more than a burnt out bulb.

Just thought sharing my experience could help others some day..

I had the same issue with mine.. I ended up removing the rubber button and superglue I g the buttons in place as it exploded when I took it apart... I am getting a new setup for the map/dome lights as they are not that expensive .. To much of a headache to fix as I spent hours on mine and said screw it...
