Default Symptoms of transmission problems?

What are some of the symptoms of auto transmissions problems such as low fluid?

I ask because lately I've had this issue where when I'm driving and step off the gas to coast to a stop, the revs drop abruptly, kinda like an early downshift. This only happens within 10 minutes of driving and when I'm between 10-20 mph, seems to be less common once the car has been running for awhile. I did see this problem before, but only when driving with the Sport Mode on...as soon as I turned it off it stopped but now it does it without it.

Seeing as your x type was built in 03, I would recommend changing the transmission fluid. What it seems to me is that the transmission is fine when the fluid gets up to temperature, but because it is old and probably dirty, the fluid does not function properly when not at it's ideal temperature. This could also be from low fluid causing erratic torque converter behavior

carwatcher, I would also do the transmission filter and fluid. $150 sounds pretty good, but make sure they aren't just doing a drain and fill and they know how to get all the fluid out.

I've been told the the fluid in our Transmission is actually Mineral Oil, is this True? Also, what brand of fluid should we get? Be gentle I really want to confirm this because it sounded kind of odd, but the person that told me is someone I've known as a friend for about 6 or 7 years don't want to tell he's crazy if he's right.

Black cat, I do not think that it is mineral oil because I have seen a thread on here saying that you can use an ATF that you can purchase from any auto parts store. I think it was like mobil 1 ATF or something similar. Do a little digging on the forum by using the "advanced search" and look only within the xtype subsection

Carwatcher, remember to come back here and let us know what you found doing the ATF change.

Default Transmission fluid Spill

Whats up guys, I just found this post. I recently had to replace my radiator and in doing so had to remove the inlet and outlet hoses on the intercooler. I guess this is cooled by the tranny fluid...anyway long story short i didnt reconnect the hoses properly and lost A LOT of tranny fluid on the driveway. I was able to find a description of where the fill port is on this forum. However, there were no pictures of where exactly the fill port was. I have attached this picture so it would be easier for everyone to find. Also somebody else in the forum, i can't remember who, made the following suggestion.
Dump the tranny fluid from the drain port and fill it up with new fluid once a quarter. Now your only going to get what is sitting in the transfer case i believe (I'm not an expert) but that should be about 3-4 quarts. If you do this even twice a year it will definitely help an older tranny. Like i said i'm no expert so anyone feel free to jump in. Also i used Mercon V when i refilled my tranny after dumping everything.
