The wires in the wiring harnesses do not 'flex or jump around'. They are stable.
The P0116 error code did NOT help. If it's a code for the following as suggested above, then it's of no use in my case:
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit poor electrical connection
I stuck to my gut instinct that it was NOT an electrical fault and replaced the thermostat. I have since done over 300 miles and the problem appears to have gone away.
guys, lately i have noticed that whenever am driving my temperature gauge rises to the red but the car doesnt overheat. i had the thermostat cleaned cos it had carbon deposits around it but it didnt solve the problem either, what could be causing this? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks
I had a similar problem on my X Type Jag. The temperature would occasionally (about once every couple of weeks, the car is used most days) go into the red within about 30 seconds, you could see the temperature gauge needle actually moving. I replaced the thermostat and that fixed the problem for me.
