Default Temperature Gauge Question

On my 2005 the temperature gauge needle is ever so slightly below the center marker. It's just a hair to the cold side of dead center. It's always been that way since I bought the car a little over a year ago. Just wondreing if that is normal or just a slight quality control issue with the guage? I'm sure there are no problems with it, just have always been curious as to why it is not dead nuts in the center of the tic mark. The right edge of the needle just touches the left edge of the center tic mark when it gets up to temperature. I know, not exactly a problem, but just wondering if anyone else has seen this.

Default It's Normal

Hi Alfadude,

I have had two X-Types and they both read exactly the same as yours.

I had a Land Rover once a new 2002 Discovery..and they exhibit the same characteristics (must be a a British thing..Ghost of Lucas)..As I understand it..There is a Temp sending unit in the lower portion of the coolant system just before it goes to the Radiator..As the temp of the coolant rises from cold you will see that the gauge increases at sort of a linear rate..but once the coolant is at the range considered normal operating temps (don't know the exact range)..as along as the coolant temp stays within this range, the gauge will not change positions with minor fluctuations in coolant temp..If the coolant temp rises above this normal range, the needle will shoot to the HOT range without any gradual linear increase..so it is imperative to always watch the temp gauge, because once you see it hit the HOT mark, it is usually too late and the engine is suffering extreme over temp conditions at this point.

Thanks for the info. Just one more thing that makes our cars unique I guess.
