terrifying discovery of COMPLETE disappearing of my firewall insulation
After my puzzling as brand new trouble code P0332, while I was looking for my manual yesterday, I discovered in horror that my glove compartment was super-full with massively crowded hard foam tiny crumbs. Completely full!. When I rose the hood I found that ALL my firewall insulation was missing. While I was dusting the glove compartment, the Mikey beast appeared and then disappeared behind the bunch of wires underneath. I couldn't catch it. Clarification that the brand new discovered P0332 is now explained by this massive mice activity by the wires in the area, not the Jaguar mechanics complicates my scare:
(1) What can happen now that my firewall does not have any insulation at all? (2) How can I avoid this ferocious invasion for further damages?
(3) What is the black container appearing in the photo showing the empty firewall, that I found covered with some oil leak? (please tell me)
Can anybody give me some help here? Please. I am very upset as I've just paid almost $5000 for repairs.
AND WHERE CAN I FIND A FIREWALL INSULATION REPLACEMENT, PLEASE? I didn't find it anywhere.
Thank you, Rapala. I didn't open the cap but was intrigued by the slight traces of fluid around it. Of course, this is not from Mikey Mouse, but the Jag mechanics. No worries here. But the firewall insulation?... where to find it?
marcela, the main purpose of the insulation is for noise reduction. yes, that wall will run a bit warmer without the insulation, but you will be fine. Look at all the old cars. What insulation did they have? None.
As for geting new insulation, I am seeing 3 options that you can take. The cheapest most likely will be to talk to your local wrecking yards and see what they would charge you for the insulation. They may practically give it to you or they may go "we have him over the barrel and it is going to cost him". Option 2 would be to look into some stuff called "Dyno-Mat". It is adhesive on one side and has insulative properties and also is designed to reduce noise. What it would cost to get enough to replace what you need, I am not sure. But, you should be able to get all you need for under $100. Then the big trick will be getting it positioned so you can press it into place. That is going to be the hard part of this job. The 3rd option is to simply go to the dealership and ask them for the part. While it may be the most expensive way to go, it may be the easiest to deal with. Granted, you are also just over a timeline. Manufacturers are required to maintain parts for vehicles for 10 years beyond when they stop making the car. Since the X-Type stopped production in 2009, that would put that time as 2019. With it being 2020, you may or may not be able to get the part through the dealership.
Thank you Thermo. I was worried only about the wires, not my own heating inside car. I believe either I have to make a hanging loose mat myself (self adhesive is not an option as is a definitive application) as the original was, or to leave the wall as is. As for the ferocious beasts, I only can use my horn and keep the hood open as often as I can. You are right, my TransAm 72 did not have firewall insulation and we survived a good couple of years together. God bless.
