about painting mesh grill black (sandpapering, spraying primer, and coating it with paint)
any opinions on it?

If I'm not mistaken Jaguar XP and similar vendors sell them already done..this way you could always go back to Chrome...

I have a black one but with a quartz surronding... I will sell it to you if you want and then you can just spay the surround red....

im just going to spray paint it and see how it goes
100 bucks is a little too much for a grill insert

I think it will look nice. Good luck with sanding a mesh grill though - you'll be at it for hours to get into all the tiny crevices!

xman that would be tight but 300 bucks -_-
so i was thinking taking out my insert sandpapering it painting it and putting it back on
and the one from jaguar xp has a chrome surrounding
im trying to get rid of all the chrome on my car

Just clean it up really nice with some form of cleaner or sandblast. Put multiple coats though.

Why don't you sand blast it by a local fabricator, or by a sand blasting kit from e-bay, not expensive and always handy for the garage.

I would second the sandblasting to ensure a clean surface to paint. I'm sure you'll like the look. Here's one with the lower mesh insert done in black as well.

Sanding a mesh grille sounds like a complete pain in the butt. Why not just:

a) clean with a de-greaser
b) use a self-etching primer
c) paint black

You'll probably get a more consistent finish that way with less effort. Make sure you pick a good metal primer, and a compatible top coat paint.
