Default Thinking of purchasing an '02 Jaguar X-Type

Hello everyone! First off, I'm new at this forum so you'll have to forgive me. Second, I have loved Jags since I was a little kid. I'm considering the purchase of a used '02 Jaguar X-Type for my wife and I as a third vehicle for the two of us. I found one around my area for a pretty sweet price. My question, is it worth it? When the X-Type first came out as an '02 model, my dad bought one. He loved it, but I remember he had a bunch of problems with it. Then again, he has problems with all of his cars (he tends to drive them pretty hard). On the occassion that I got to drive it, it drove really nice and i enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I don't want the trouble of car problems, but I've always wanted a Jag of my own. What do you guys think? Any thoughts / comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

My suggestion if you really want an x-type and you can afford to add a little more money, go for an '04 or later model. I own an '02 sport and love it to death. I was lucky that the previous owner had gone through most of the problems from the earlier models and had them replaced (transfer case especially) befor I bought it. Seems that the newer models have less of a headache if you want to keep the car for awhile. Go for it though, it's a great car. Just make sure to get an extended warranty or put money to the side knowing you will definitely have some repairs down the road.

Thanks, Ray. Unfortunately, an '04 is right on the edge of my price range so I think any vehicles that I was happy with (color, options, etc.) and was in my price range would be few and far between. Any suggestions on an extended warranty?

I have an '02 and I am happy with it. Given the fact that I had to replace my throttle body the 2nd day after I bought it, Im still happy with it. I get alot of compliments on it.

I have an 02 aswell, i truly think its a lot of car for the money and its a great looking and respectable car. My only dislike is the high cost of repair and the known fact that you will encounter some. I bought mine with 30k miles in 04 and now have 90k, since i've bought it ive had to repair my tansfer case, change my oil pan gasket and trottle body gaskets and several vacume hoses which luckily i was able to figure out myself and change for next to nothing. Now 40k miles after my transfer case repair i'm getting noises indicating that it may need repair once again.... note that replacing the oil pan gasket alone is a $1000+ job and the transfer case is well above that. Hope this helps.

My '02 has 157k mi. on it now, but I got it for $8k with 128k miles on it (dealer loan car) and put $5k into it to completelty bring it back. The factory installed Satnav alone was a $3k upgrade for these models so I couldn't pass her up. Since your aquisition may be an ego comforter for the wife it may be worth it, if she really wants it and you get a great price. Do plan on some repair issues.

Thanks for the input everyone. For those who have had problems, at what mileage (approx) did the car start to act up? The car I'm looking at has only 40,000 miles (great for an '02). When my dad had an X-Type, his starting having problems right about 45,000 miles. However, when I took in for service one time, the service advisor for Jaguar said that most of the '02-'03 X-Types that came in with the major problems usually only had about 10,000 miles and, for the most part, everything was taken care of (most common faults cured) by the time the car hit about 30,000 miles so it was rare for an X-Type to have so many miles before it started having issues. Is this true (for the most part) or do the X-Types vary as to when they start to go out. I'm hoping the car I want has already gone through the major issues so I'm not stuck with everything.

Thanks again!

I believe my first Jaguar was a used '02 3.0 sport. It had only 14K miles when I bought it back in 2004....

I drove the heck out of that car though, I drove to So-cal 8 times (for soccer tournaments), and also to vegas 6 times, Idaho 3 times, and was stuck in I-5 traffic going up to Seattle 1000 times over the 2 years I owned it.

When I traded it in for my new X-type I think it had around 69,000 miles on it. You will be happy to know that except for oil changes every 5K, 4 new tires, and several chip repairs on my windshield, I NEVER had problems with it!!

I hope you are as fortunate with your '02, and get tons of injoyment from it

Ok, so my wife isn't big on the idea of getting an '02 becuase of the problems reported on it (regardless of what I tell her...stubborn but I love her anyway). I've been told that an '04 or newer model X-Type may be a better investment. I found one about an hour from where we live and my wife has agreed to come with me to look at it next weekend. I've noticed that some '04 and all '05 newer X-Types have a different steering wheel than that of the '02-'03 models. My question, could I replace the steering wheel on an '04 with a steering wheel from on '02 model? I personally think the steering wheel used in the newer models is hideous (just my opinion). Thanks everyone!

I have an '05 and I really like the new steering wheel with the thumb wheels instead of the buttons, especially for the cruise control. Plus, I think they are in a bit more ergonomically friendly place compared to the previous wheel. But, everyone is different.

Yeah i like the steering wheel in my 02, the newer ones don't seem to match the interior as nice, and i don't want it to be another LS part. Pluss, i think it looks better

I had an 2002 X-type 2.5 for about 1.5 years. I loved the car and the compliments I received but in the end, it was the cost of the repairs that made me get rid of it. I bought it with 55,000 miles on with with a brand new transmission from the factory. in the 1.5 years I had it, I had the air mass sensor replaced, fuel pump replaced, and the transfer case replaced -- that is the repair that made me get rid of it. Strange enough, I still think about getting another Jag. I would definitely get one with an extended warranty or 2004 and later. I hope this helps.
