My gear lever seems to have an extra couple millimetres of movement needed to keep engaged to third gear. I have to hold it for a several seconds to make sure it stays there. I almost got rear ended when it came off when going uphill.

Could it be solved by adjusting the gear change cables?

 

Probably adjustment, or it could be wear in the box, but try adjustment first.
