Default Tire recommendation for X-Type

Needing some insight on the most practical tire to buy for the 03' X-type 2.5 Got the car a little over 2 mo. ago needing to get a set of tires on it. I don't need a high performance tire. My wife drives the car back and forth to work and around town a bit, about 10-12 miles a day max. The X-Type is heavy and is notorious for a loud ride. I would like to get a tire that is going to give us a smooth, quiet ride. But if I have to sacrifice a little of the quiet to get a good tread wear rating I will. Also I really don't want to spend a cool Grand on a set of tires designed for the Autobon. Just wanting to get a good tire that will last at least 40-45K and is a good fit for the X-Type.
Thanks.

Nothing beats Conti's ExtremeContact DWS in terms of performance for your $.

Did you check to see what Tire Rack recommends for the car?

Conti DWS are great winter tires, however they leave a lot to be desired for dry road handling. I ran them last winter and wasn't impressed with cornering stability.

You won't go far wrong with PIRELLI Tyres.... selected to suit your 16" rims

I use Pirelli PZERO ROSSO 225/40 ZR on my 18/8 - Indianapolis BBS Rims.

They are super quiet, very comfortable and hold the road like super magnets.

Continue extreme dws hands down. Best money ever spent on all season tires. They were rating the best of the group that tirerack had tested. I take on off ramps at 50 to find the limits and they don't do much as squeal. Road noise is a little high though.

the Michelin Pilot Super Sport - the best tires I've tried. But they fit only 18+inch wheels.

I am in absolute agreement, for the 2.5 AWD X Type, I would reccpmend Pirelli P6 or Latter P6000, but along woth Lcgi, I would go again for the Pirelli P Zero Rosso, without a doubt, yes they are pricey, but I would happily sacrifice a few nights out to have the dry and wet grip (Immense!) and a combination of good wear and smooth ride, I absolutely trust these tyres in all weathers without any doubt.

I have had very good luck with DISCOUNT TIRE here in MPLS, Mn, Tell them what you want (ride type, mileage, price range) and they will fit your car and beat any price and they have helped me with warranty(tire) issues. I have bought 5 sets there because others have either wouldn't stand up for there warranty, service or were big enough to offer a competitive price.I have no connection with them(Discount) other than I buy tires there.
With that said, Tread to sidewall ratio is going to determen ride stiffness EG. 45 series will ride harder than 55 series will. and tread compound has to do with drivability (traction, tire wear). I had a set of KUMO mono directional 225/45/17s on last and I will never buy them again. traction--bad, wear---bad, noise---bad and you can only rotate FRT. to RR. I just tell my new passengers that suspension was optional on this sport model of Jag.LOL

TireRack.com is one of the forum sponsors, and I have purchased two sets from them and had them delivered (once to the house, once to the tire store) and really did get the best bang for my buck from them.

I ordered the Pirelli Studded Snow tires from them online, but had a few questions before I committed to the Summer tires so I called them.

The Sales Rep was great, and obviously NOT working on commission as he didn't simply sell me the most expensive ones he could. My priorities were;

1) The highest speed rating suitable,
2) The QUIETEST tires I could get, and
3) The BEST VALUE he had on that particular day.

In a few days the shop called and told me they were in, and put them on no problemo. TireRack.com has "Member" shops, so they weren't bent out of shape that I did not purchase from the shop's stock at all.

The Rep also promised me if they weren't quiet, they'd exchange them. That is pretty nifty, as something like that is entirely (haha - a pun!) subjective.

I was and still am perfectly happy with his selection for my X-Type; Price, performance and noise level.

(Bridgestone Potenza Sports)

Give 'em a call, see what you think.
