Tranny fluid change
Hi to all,
I'm one of the new kids on the block with an '04 X type (44,000 miles). I've seen a lot written on the tranny oil change topic. I'd like to change mine, but have read several posts which offer different advice. Bottom line, is there a diffinitive, final consensus on how to do this procedure (other than the dealer), and other than JATCO fluid, is there, and what is,the compatible fluid brand/type?ThanX!

There are different levels of thoroughness, and of course the easiest way is less thorough. Jatco fluidis for auto tranny.
TC is filled with 600ml of 75w140 synthetic GL5 gear oil. There is Ford spec oil, Castrol oil, redline, royal purple and then store brand oils. Since the overall idea here is to get into a routine of changing the oil more often, I dont think we need to worry about the suble differences in oil. I have had my case totally apart, and there are no special gears or bearings inside. Anything special about the oil is likely due to making it a Long life oil, and we are specifically ignorring that.
most thorough is to remove the TC totally, and turn it upside down and get all the oil out. then you can re-fill with 600 ml.
Next is to disconnect the driveshaft, and a few brackets, and then remove the rear output pinions housing, 550 ml should drain out. (so far there is no report of that much oil left inside) this will leave 50ml inside, and so you refill with 550ml. This is more of a pain but more thorough.
Thirdly, there is a drain plug, but it is not at the bottom of the oil level. when you drain it only 400 will come out, and there will be 200mL of oil (maybe dirty) left inside. This is dead simple to do and not a bad solution for most people. the refill amount will be 400 ml.
Refilling is well discussed, but the only way to fill the case while the case is in the car is through the drain plug. You need to attach a hose to the drain hole and get the right amount of oil to go in. then you need the set up or dexterity to remove the hose, and re-plug the hole without the oil falling out. Again there are some options.
Does that help?

OK. Thanks for the responses. While I'm on the tranny subject, does anyone have a tranny problem now that the cold weather is here? Mine runs awful when I first start the car in the morning. I fact, my red warning light (drivetrain failure) goes on. I find that once the car warms up a bit, I can turn the car off, then restart, and the red warning lightis goes off.My driveway goes up-hill. In the morning when its cold, I can't make it up the driveway. Although I'm in gear, it feels and reacts like I'm in neutral. What's up with this nonsense?????

Low on fluid would be my first guess..Since the fluid expands in volume as it heats up, would explain why things act normal once it's warmed up....I'm avoiding any big negitive implications that the tranny is starting to fail...I'd try to add some fluid and see if that helps your cold starts first, before calling out the gloom and doom patrol..
I'm sure that would help him Bo IF he were doing the TC, but he
asked about drain and refill on the Tranny!

Thanks, I've seen that site before. There seems to be quite a price disparity however. I know the stuff is costly and that I'll need about 10 qts. Are the quoted prices on a per-quart basis, or for a case...? Thanks.
Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately, it seems we're all in the same boat on the tranny fluid thing. We're damned if we change it (cost), and damned if we don't (cost).YUK [:@]
