Default Tranny Question

I was driving my 02 X type home today, auto tranny, and something weird happened. I want to see if any else has had this happen to them and what I should do about it. I was on about a quarter mile stretch going about 45-50 MPH when it seemed as if my tranny went into neutral, by this I mean the engine RPMs revved to about 5k and then dropped down to around 3k, and it seemed I didn't have any forward acceleration and then it would grip again, not violently like it was catching a gear. It did this twice or maybe three times. I turned onto a road and put it through the gears manually, twice, while making a big loop and got the car back up to about 50mph again and could not repeat the situation.

I read through the forum and didn't see anything on this. Any suggestions what could be the problem? The car has about 70K and as far as I know the tranny has never been serviced.

Could it have popped out of Drive and into Neutral?

Could it be that your trans fluid is low?

By instinct I checked that first, it was still in drive becauseI tapped the stick down to verify it was in driveand then put it in neutral to feel it. The fluid could be low, I have never checked it.I have been thinking of flushing the fluid and filling it with new, this may motivate me to do it sooner.

What's weird about what you described, is that it sounds like a slipping clutch, which is impossible since it's obviously an auto. I had a 88 Honda Prelude Si back in the day, and it did exactly what you're describing a few times...

I bought a new tranny about a month later.

I think we have a Jag tech in the forum. If I remember my Lincoln use to do the same thing. I believe it was an accumulator piston in the tranny. It help the gears change or something. Either way it was a good excuse to but in a shift kit. Do they make them for Jag's? Let me see if I can dig up some of the old posts to confirm.

Scrath the accumulator piston theory, that was due to a shudder problem I had. But I did find out that it could be a sign of a worn out clutch or your linkage is off...

I hasn't reoccurred and no engine light. I will be changing the fluid soon so I'll look for signs of wear. Thanks everyone
