Default Transfer Case tip / question

I have removed the transfer case to allow for transmission removal and service. I came up with simple way to make a tool to hold the input shaft so I could pry off the halfshaft as well as keep it in place for removal without risk to the inner seal. I basically took a flat plate, drilled holes to mount to the y bracket holes and welded a muffler clamp to the bracket via a small piece of 1/2 inch square tubing.this allows a support to pry off of as well as telescope to the length needed for removal without risk of going too far.

My questions are as follows:

1. Even with a pry point I still couldn't separate the halfshaft from the linkshaft. I plan to make a better y shaped pry bar as my ball joint separator just wasn't cutting it. Is there a better way? I even tried whacking with a hammer (after supported with above tool of course), but still no luck. As you can see in the photos, I removed the entire shaft with the TC.

2. Only a small amount of oil came out of the case (maybe 1oz or 2) only when I tipped it on it's side. The case had some fine crack marks. I'm not sure if they are just normal surface blemishes or something I should be alarmed of. I did take a photo of one. If experienced with these, what do you think? How do you recommend I inspect and determine if a rebuild or replacement is necessary. I never had the luxury of driving the car, as I purchased it with the tranny problem, so I don't know if there were any driving issues with the case.

Thanks all, with special thanks to Thermo for his help with the dismantle so far!

Dave

Simply take off the booth retaining strap (large one) and pull the half shaft out of the link shaft. There is no retainer of any kind. Not sure what you were hammering on. Looks like you have a crack in the case and have lost your oil. I would suspect the TC is T (Toast).

Dave,

read that link and study the pictures ... it shows where the drive shaft comes apart from the link shaft plus some other info about creating a drain point

hope it helps

John,

Thanks for the info and excellent write up. The joint that the jtis recommends is the one circled in this attached photo. It's great to know I can just remove the boot for separation, but I will still have to disassemble at this joint as I removed and discarded (destroyed) the sandwiched seal as per jtis

Thanks again,

Dave

this is a long link .... or else go to b12jags then look at transmission parts
you always see them split at the universal joint ....

Are there any aftermarket suppliers of rebuild parts for these? If not, do I have to purchase an entire kit from jaguar, or can I order specific parts? My inner seal seems O.K., but I'll need at least one bearing and the seal on the linkshaft side.

Thanks

But what are you going to do about the obvious crack in the case?

That ain't gonna grow back...

The hairline crack shows no sign of leakage. My guess is that it is surface only (I haven't inspected the inside of the case yet). I did over sharpen the image for display purposes.
I know these cases are weak to begin with. Should I just bite the bullet and replace it? I was able to drain a little more fluid out of the case (it wasn't dry enough to create lubrication issues). The main seal coming undone is what appears to have done most of the damage to the bearing behind it.

Dave - Did you ever find out if the crack was serious or cosmetic?
