Default Transmission

My 2002 x-type has 3rd and reverse gears only. It is not the transmission computer as that has been replaced. Any ideas anybody please?

Servicing the fluid would be my first move. How many miles on your car, and when did this problem appear? Is Check Engine Light on?

Oy.....almost every time we have a query about a transmission issue the car in question is a 2002 model. The fact is that the 2002 and very early 2003 transmissions had issues, one of the most common being a cracked reverse gear solenoid (but there were other items as wel). This part and other bits were redesigned and strengthened at this point and the later cars do not exhibit anything near the frequency of problems that the 2002 cars had. For the record, this JATCO 506E unit was used in a number of other makes: Mazda, VW, Seat, Land Rover...and they all experienced the same problems.
The bad news is that in most cases a transmission rebuild is required. As the transmissions were very common, any good transmission shop can deal with it.
