Default XJ oil requirements

I have sent this message to Jaguar twice and haven't gotten a response. Can anyone here help me?

My owner's manual says 5W 30 spec WSSM2C913-C motor oil should be used.
The oil filler cap on the motor says 5W 20, not 5W 30
The dealer used 5W 20
The oil manufactures say use 5W 30 spec WSS M2C913-C for a 2013 and for a 2014 use 5W 20 WSS M2C925- A only (superseded by WSSM@C 945-A)
Since my car was made towards the end of the 2013 model year I am unsure which oil to use.
Do I use the 5W 20 as on the cap and which the dealer used or the different spec 5W 30?
Thanks
Eric

Does the owner's manual list an ambient temperature range and the correlating viscosity? Jaguar recommends Castrol Edge Professional oils. I went on Castrol's website and the "professional" version wasn't listed. Perhaps that's just the Jaguar branded version and is no different from the plainly marked Edge?

Jaguar and Castrol Partnership - Co-engineering Quality Oil

If you're just topping off I would use exactly what the dealer put into the engine.

Yes it does. This does not seem to be an adequate answer to the OP. (??)

Seeing he's from CT I think it's best to use the 5w-20 Castrol Edge.

ecamiel, some people may disagree with what I am about to say, but this is the thought behind it to. Both oils are satisfactory for use. Both oils are going to have the same viscosity when the engine is cold and oil flow is needed immediately to prevent metal on metal wear. This is where the "5" portion of the oil weight comes into play. Now the question becomes whether the 20 weight or 30 weight oil should be used. The general thought is during hot months, the engine is going to run slightly warmer, so the thicker oil will actually be thinner than the measured viscosity since the oil will be warmer.

So, why is oil thickness of concern? Simple. How the oil protects the metal parts is by forming what is called an oil wedge (ie, the oil between the two moving metal parts). A thicker oil tends to make a thicker wedge. So, logic would say that running an oil like 20W-50 would be best. Not so with modern day cars. Modern day cars have very tight tolerances (ie, very little distance between parts). The thicker oils actually can be too "thick/tall" to fit into these gaps and therefore leave the metal parts to rub on each other. So, you can see where this would be bad. Now the question becomes whether the 5W-30 oil is thin enough to fit into the gaps between parts. In the case of the XJ, during hot months, the answer to this question is yes. But note, this is only during the hot months. When the weather turns colder, the 5W-30 oil may be too thick to provide adequate coating of the parts and therefore, prevent metal on metal contact.

So, for you, since you live in Connecticut, when did you last change the oil and if you put in the 5W-30 oil in say April, will you be changing the oil before November hits? If so, then using 5W-30 will not be an issue during the summer months and you can use 5W-20 during the winter months.

This isn't a simple Yes or No answer. There are many factors that play into it.

That contradicts the owner's manual that clearly states 10W-30 for this year.

The OP has asked this same simple question almost 10 times but still comes back for more (????)

Mikey, but also keep in mind that Jaguar has released TSBs stating that use of 5W-20 in the car is actually recommended over the 5W-30, even though the owner's manual states to use 5W-30. 5W-20 provides all the same lubrication qualities as 5W-20 under normal use but can also help improve your gas mileage due to taking less energy to move the oil through the engine. By no means am I saying that you will be like "wow, that made a world of a difference". This is more on the "maybe I saw a 0.1 mpg difference".

Chris-

Please put the OP out of his misery and post the TSB.

Thanks.

I did hear that the only reason car manufacturers moved to thinner oils is because of fuel economy. I would like to see a test that shows a 20 weight oil protects just as well as a 30 or 40 weight.

Thank you all for trying to answer my oil question. My apologies for my multiple posts.
The difference in oil weight I fully understand. The difference in WSS specs is what I question. WSSM2C913-C motor oil verses 5W 20 WSS M2C925- A ONLY (superseded by WSSM@C 945-A)The different WSS numbers represent different additive packages having to do with anti wear elements, emission concerns etc. The manual and oil company web sites seem very insistent about which WSS to use (see my earlier post with all lube specs and capacities).
The change in WSS occurred sometime between the 2013 and the 2014 model year.
If there is a service bulletin about this please let me know how to access it.
Jaguar customer service has not been a help and my local dealer says bring it in for a $640 oil change.

Eric, I think you answered your own question here. If your car was manufactured in late 2013 it's a 2014 model, right? So use either 5W-20 WSS M2C925 or WSS MC945-A of the same weight. I highly doubt you'd cause engine damage by using either spec. Are you wanting to start doing your own oil changes?

My car was purchased as a 2013 which is what is causing my confusion - one spec on the motor and the older spec in the owner's manual. I can't find at what VIN the oil requirement changed from 2013 to 2014 specs.
Yes, definitely will do my own oil changes at $640 a pop from the dealer. I'm comfortable doing that and have a good suction type oil changing rig to save me crawling under the car.
Can you tell me how to access the oil filter?

I would go with what's on the oil cap. The owner's manual was probably printed in 2012 for the 2013 model year and not updated when they made the oil change towards the end of 2013. I can't help with the filter location, sorry.

ecamiel, if you open up the hood of the car, look at the front end of the engine. On the top part of the car (just to the left of where the 2 air tubes meet), you should see a gray cap with a Ford logo on it. That is the cap for the oil filter. If you remove that, you will see the oil filter inside. The filter is at the top of the engine, not on the under side like you would expect.

I'm still trying to get over $640 for an oil change. That's a new record I think.

No, the record is $960 by another dealer I called !
The all insist on on changing the coolant, trans, brake and steering fluids plus many other unnecessary and not recommended procedures at every oil change. Just sucker procedures.

I guess they assume if you drive a late model XJ you have endless pockets.

Before you vacuum the oil out, warm up the oil and then let the car sit on level ground for 20 minutes. You would be amazed how long it takes for the oil to drain down to the pan. You will want to buy an oil filter cover removal tool online. When changing the oil filter, don't overtighten it, its plastic and can crack.
