Transmission exchange

Transmission exchange
Hey everyone,
So the transmission in my car went out. I've been looking at used ones but needed some advice on what I need to watch-out for. I don't have a ton of money, so this is what I've decided to do. And, since I just got new solenoids for my transmission I wanted to change those out for the ones in the new (used) unit I buy. I'm aware that I'll have to have the TCM reprogramed when I do this, the local Ford dealership should be able to help me, right?
I see on ebay there are quite a few transmissions with between 20-60k miles on them, years 2004-2008, with limited warranties on them for around $1,000. I don't have the $4,500 that local shops have quoted me to replace my transmission.
So, if I was to do this, what are the big red flags that I should be looking for?
Thanks everyone,
James.

I can't advise James but be careful, some of the guys will come back to you, so no1 be patient and I cannot suggest get the right info, then double check it!!
If I can get info, I will..
Plus, you want the right people to do it and what I would suggest is maybe thinking what your car value is as I don't know what you have?
You may be cheaper sourcing another vehicle with a newer transfer case?
Unless you are planning on doing it yourself?
hang in there Bud! Regards, Stu

Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice so far. I would like to know if there's a way to make sure the donor car had only so many miles. Case-in-point, I'm looking at a transmission that they claim only has 24,000 miles on it. But how do I know that's true? How do I know that this car didn't have 200,000 miles on it and they are just trying to pull a fast one?
Stu, I have a 2002 with 124,000 on her. I love this car! I picked it up for $1,700, I've replaced the upper radiator hose, expansion tank, one lower control arm, and fan shroud with controller. I've also made a custom gasket for the transfer case, drained it and refilled it.
I plan on doing any work myself, as I don't trust mechanics.
Thanks guys again!
Jim

Jim,
That is kinda cool, I like your style and you obviously wanna keep Her Ladyship then!
That is also a hard one to fathom, I think you'd need to be one smart cookie to really find out the truth on that one, hmm.
So you must have an automatic AWD 3.0L then?
If you are gonna fit the transmission then you will see it so it should'nt be rocket science, er well almost!
The easy answer would be to compare it with a like for like example, which you happen to know the mileage for, yours?
Hmm, gonna have a think............tricky without parting with the cash up front unkless you remove yours first? yeah, gonna have a think

Hi Jim, I just guessed the size of engine!
It's kind of tricky as I said but you seem to have great initiative and guile for doing your own stuff which I highly admire but back to your issue.
I think its going to take a lot of time but if you can source from somewhere you trust and match the transmission to a vehicle, here in the UK, you can do a history check through a government website and basically with the registration number and vin or V05 number you can ascertain where the motor has been and usually if there's something not right, with a little detection, you can find the right info.
And then there's the visual sode of things, if it don't look right...
Over your side of the pond things may be different but I sadly admit bent crooks appear to be everywhere, just try to be careful!
And Good Luck!! Stu
