Transmission problem

My 2002 2.5 petrol X type has a recurring problem of only having 3rd and reverse gears. Can anyone suggest a solution for this please?

This a manual transmission or automatic? If automatic I'd say service the fluid; that's about the only thing you can do that's reasonable in cost.

If its auto it may need more than a fluid change?
