Doubt I've seen a more ridiculous suggestion. Here's what cheap oil gets you. If you want best performance and longest engine life, synthetic oil is the way to go - which is why many OEMs specify them. There's many excellent synthetic oils on the market, with good value to be had if you shop around. Lazy gotta-have-it-now DIYers go to Walmart and buy Mobil 1 for $5 a quart. Cheap enough?

Whatever works for you is fine. However when you give advice like "cheap oil is fine" or "oil is oil" that others disagree with, then expect other opinions to surface. There's wide performance and service life variations in motor oils; they're not all the same as you think. Reasonable change intervals using decent (or better) quality oil is best for long life. Current (though not in our X-Types) engine advancements like direct injection, variable valve timing, turbocharging and others demand excellent oils, hence the trend toward synthetic by the OEMs.

Given that manufacturers desire low original cost, and the ability to
advertise low maintenance costs ....

would we not expect those manufacturers to source their oil from
Walmart house brand Super Tech if it worked, and to tell owners
they could use the same?

They certainly cheap out on everything else possible, why would
they not use the cheapest oil if they could get away with it?

OEMs do get the best price on lubricants - because of the volume commanded for both factory fill and service fill at their dealership networks. And they get them from the major oil companies too. Consumer retail market is completely different.

Geesh! This was all he asked.
No need to get into an oil type battle. There are no winners there!

I take it that you didn't quite get the drift.

The point is not the oem's particular pricing, but
rather that an oem would be loath to use anything
more expensive than absolutely required.

Now, if they happen to specify something more
expensive than the cheapest, then there must
be a reason. Thus, if a manufacturer specifies
a synthetic then they must perceive some benefit
to paying extra.

I was worried about those nano particles clogging up the chain tensioner but I now realise they are too small to do that.

These new oils are a whole lot safer on your oxygen sensors and cats than other types of oil. The nano particle added types like castrol edge titanium, magnatec and millers oils nanodrive is a whole lot more slippery and tougher film than earlier oils. That means startup is a lot less stressful on the engine.

Im definitely going to use edge titanium.

I think just because a car has gone a lot of miles with no engine problems is not sufficient reason to believe it wouldn't have performed better and lasted even longer with a better quality oil. Every mechanic I've dealt with in recent years swears by synthetic oils and if they buy a new car with normal oil in it, they immediately replace it with synthetic. Any oil can get dirty and regular changes at decent intervals is probably even more important than oil quality. However, the new synthetics with those "nano" whatever additives are designed to cling more to those moving engine parts, rather than all drain down into the bottom of the sump. That few seconds at startup is where engine wear occurs because the moving parts are all dry until the oil gets pumped up onto them. This makes sense to me so I use the castrol edge titanium full synthetic in all my cars. I would say lower cost Walmart synthetic is probably just as good if your on a really tight budget though.
