Default USED Tranny installed, need help!!!

I just installed a used tranny from a parts yard and it is doing some weird things. I started it and ran through the gears but the selector cable wasn't adjusted right so it was acting up. I adjusted it and then I tried to take it for a spin to see if everything was OK. When I put it into reverse it moves a little but shutters allot, almost like a clutch going into first and not quite gripping. I can put it into drive and it seems fine, I even drove it around the block. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the torque converter. When I swapped out the tranny I did loss some fluid out of it. I used the JTIS software info to fill the tranny, it was at about 95 degrees when I added the last quart to top it off. Could it have not filled the torque converter all the way up and only be affecting the reverse gear? Other than the tranny having a bad reverse is there anything anyone can think of I can try to fix this problem? I am taking it to the dealer on Monday because it threw an engine light. I figured it was due to the new tranny. I would like to try and tinker with it before they charge me out the butt to resolve my problem so speak up if you have an idea.

My specs: 02 X Type 3.0 ( older tranny model not compatible with newer years)

Shouldn't be the Torque converter as it is fine in Drive as you say...it spins in the same direction regardless of which gear you're in...I say it is something with the shifter linkage adjustment still...

BTW; what year of X did it come out of and what type of ATF did you use?

Wow that was fast Dennis..... Due to my VIN number I have to use the same year tranny, it came from an 02. I used castrol multi foreign ATF.

Should have used Dextron VI, regardless, i would check your shifter cable again. Try disconnecting the battery for 60 secs and see if that clears any codes.

Racer , do you think the fluid would have something to do with it? It isn't that hard to drain it, maybe I'll try that after the shifter gets looked at. Which mounts are you referring to, the ones to the motor or the one to the chassis? Can you explain the logic behind that, I'm not understanding?

Motor mount/tranny mount, ensure it's in good condition. They are designed to absorb the vibrations. If they are damaged in any way, the vibrations are transfered to the chassis.

As for your tranny fluid, i would let it be till you get the prognoses from the dealer. If he can't figure it out, i would drain fluid and add Dextron VI

take it from there..

I don't think you'll have any problems with the fluid you used..it meets the same specs as the K17 Jatco...If it's not compatable, in that I mean mixable with the Jatco, it won't be an issue for quite few miles.

Ooops, I ain't Racer

Who knows..maybe nothing will go wrong at all...

Just saying until he gets the shifting problem solved, then do a go drain and refill with whatever.

I do have a couple of questions for you Grimm..

How were you able to measure the Tranny fluid temp?

And Where exactly did you add the fluid at?

I was at an auto hobby shop that has stalls to rent and equipment they own that we can use, a military benift and thank god for it. They had a "ray gun" that measures temp with a laser, hand held. I just aimed it at the inner side(at the driver wheel well) and I got it into the 90 degree F range. I already put about 5 qts before I starteed it up. To warm it up I just started the engine and went through the gears with the brakes on, it took about3 mins to get it to the 90s. I added the fluid at the top, it has a allen stock head and opened the bottom plug(overflow tube plug)and waited until it started flowing out of it, l stopped filling and let the excess drain out. I did it the way the JTIS said to do it. I ended up only putting close to 7 qts because the torque converter already had some in it from my last tranny.
I am going to the dealer tomorrow should I have them check the fluid level. I know they use some sort of computer diagnostic to get the temp but I am assuming the ray gun is pretty close to what they would get, especially when the range is from 80 to 104 degrees F.

Thanks for all the post I am hoping it is just a shifter problem. I will find out tomorrow!

This is a very impressive job to do on your own. How did you pull the tranny? It sounds like you had a lift, so I'm assuming you dropped the front subframe, and then removed only the tranny(?)

Yes i did have a lift and I had to pull th subframe, the transfer case, and then the tranny, it took me two full weekends with help from a friend. It wasn't easy and I almost lost my mind on one or two bolts that were impossible to loosen/tighten. Not somethingI want to do again but it turns out the trannyI got has a bad reverse gear, man that sucks!

The dealers did and they diagnost a bad reverse gear, friction plate couldn't hold the torque while in reverse. So that was the end of my sega.

Sad to say that forced me to sell it. I traded it in on a Mercedes C240. I still like Jags but I needed a running car.I wasn't happy to do it but it was my only option. I'm sure I'll be back in a Jag in a couple of years. I plan on sticking around the forum just in case anyone has a tranny question, I am well versed now.
