My '05 X-Type wagon was running on 5 cylinders yesterday morning. Ignition coil 1 was faulty, so I took the intake off to replace it and was greeted with the attached images. It seems the metal ring around the spark plug hole has disintegrated. How is that even possible? Am I correct in assuming I need to replace the entire valve cover now? Please advise. The whole spark plug valley is sealed from the rest of the engine by a seal on the underside of the valve cover. The base of the coil not sealing isn't critical. I would clean that area up, glob dielectric grease around the corroded area before you install the coil and call it a day.
I had the same problem on mine and it let water in which caused the plugs to misfire and wrecked the front catalyser. I put a ring of RTV sealant around the hole to seal against the rubber as its easily removed when I remove the coil.
