Default Want to buy an X-type...

Hello everyone. I just joined the site. I fell in love with the Jag x-type about 1 year ago. I have decided within the past 3 months to purchase a used '04 or '05. I've been trying to do as much research on this car as possible. So far, I hear nothing but bad things...like, Jags are unreliable, expensive to maintain and fix when they do break down. I hear the transmissions suck. I hear they tend to have head gasket issues at around 80,000 miles etc. I've done internet research, have talked to Jag owners, dealers etc. I hear nothing but bad stuff. This concerns me, but I still love that car. LOL

What kind of problems do you x-type owners have with your cars? I live in PA, it seems that most 04/05 models that have anywhere between 70k and 85k on them are running between 10k & 12k. Do you think this is too much for those years with that amount of miles? I did find an '04 that only had 1 owner, clean carfax report, it has only 25k miles on it...that dealer wants 14k out the door. Seems kind of high price. Also, one more question...I did find a nice 03' sport...are the sport models better than the regular models?

Any help, advice, opinions are greatly appreciated!!!!

I'd get an 04 or newer if it were me, but some have had good luck with the 02/03 cars. 12k seems high in PA.

The x-type had issues in it's early years, but don't lump all jags into the unreliable category. My xk8 is very reliable and Jaguar just placed 3rd or 4th in dependibility survey behind Lincoln (1) and Lexus (2)

Thank you exexpat & orlando. I will def get either the 04 or 05, leaning towards the 05. I really like this car. I LOVE your car exexpat...!!! After I buy mine I want to throw some rims on it...I saw in another thread somewhere that you are selling some rims, are they still available?

Definately try for a Feb 04 or higher, you can look inside the drivers door for the date. I have not heard any issues with head gaskets except on the V8 R series in the S and XJ models. Transmissions aren't the issue either, it is the fact that since they are 'sealed for life' like a 0 maintenance battery the fluids never get changed. The biggest issue you'll find is on the cars with a bad maintenace history. Vacuum leaks making the CEL come on, TCM getting wet and spitting out gearbox faults. Also look for the traction control button on the console in front of the cupholders.

If you are looking at an 05 go with a sport model, adds the chin spoiler, 18 rims and 40 series, more bolster in the seats and the chrome delete package.

PS, Exexpat sold the rims

1. This is really high on miles so it is most likely more than one owner

2. It does not have the premium audio (speaker grill in front does not say Alpine). There is a very big difference in audio quality between the stock and premium speakers.

3. 73K miles seems really high. The car at this mileage should have had it's transfer case oil changed and unless it was very well taken care of, you could expect major repairs pretty soon. This has little to do with the x type, more with cars that have that kind of mileage..

I was told by the dealer that even some 06 (and earlier) models had traction control but the driver could not disengage it. With 07 you have the button to disable traction control since it was a standard feature...

I think some Subaru's are like that as well - you can't disengage the traction control.

Anyway, I would have been misinformed by the dealer.

Same color as mine. I just saw the original post and was about to offer you a test drive in my 05 Sport. From the ad you posted from Langhorne I figure you're not that far from me. I love mine too but could be persuaded to sell it because I'm itching to get an XKR. Good luck with the new ride.

I'm right down the TP near the Lansdale interchange. Hey, if you're ever thinking about adding the Sport effects on your car, I have a brand new (unpainted) front air dam. I also have a set of Aruba 18" wheels or my OZ's too.

I'm not sure when the DCS button appeared, I have a late 04 model and I have the button. I tried cornering at speed without it. completely different, you dont realize what the thing does until you turn it off. I looked at an 02 and it wasn't there so....

Go on fleabay and look what's there and what the buy it now is to get an idea of milage and options. I had a chance to drive a few non sport models, different animal completely, look for a sport if you like more performance oriented, but if you are looking for a floaty ride don't get it. The springs are stiffer, the 40 series let you feel every bump in the road.

That's only 25 minutes from me. I do want to do some work on it. I want to have the chrome on the bumpers removed and add plain ones, well not plain but painted the color of the car. And I already found a rear spolier brand new unpainted for $40. Can you attach a photo of the front air dam, I can't picture what it looks like. How much for it? I want to 'try' and go with 20's on the wheels. What size are your OZ's?

You can see the front apron (as they call it) at:
Jaguar X-Type Sport Bodykit for Jaguar X-Type

(Mina sale price is $285)

My price $200 picked up (trades considered).

My OZ's are 18".
Google Image Result for http://www.tirerack.com/images/wheels/oz/swap/oz_canyon_II_pl_ci3_l.jpg

Maybe 19's or 20's work on the standard suspension but they'd hurt on the Sport.

I have the stock 18" Aruba's (w/spent rubber), the 18" OZ's with Bridgestone Potenza's and a set of 16" MSW with Dunlap Winter Sport snow tires (best snow tires I've ever owned). I'd part with either 18" set just to make room but keep the snows until I sell the car, they're that good.
