Default weird ash tray question...

This is my first post! I got a 2003 X-Type about 2 months ago and love the car. I have a weird question, I noticed that the ash tray in the front does not have any kind of light in or on it so you can see in it at night. Is there a light there and my buld or fuse is bad? Thanks in advance for your help.

Nope, not just you. There's no light there.

Ok, don't get me wrong... I love my X-type. It may be one of the best cars I have ever had... But, with all it does and as much thought that went into it's great design you kind of wonder how such a common thing could be over looked! oh well, I hope the next Jag has a light where a light should be.

There is that small amber light on the overhead console that lights up the whole lower console. Maybe they thought that was enough?

Funny.. i have always wondered why there is a light at all in any ash tray? what on earth do you need a light there for?
+1 I see no reason to have a light there. Hell why would you smoke in a car, with leather?!?!?!

Well I guess you answered the question...its an ash tray not a coin tray! J/K
But whatever you actually need to see like say the cigarette plug has a light ring around it.

I'm going to dub it the "mood light" doesn't change with the knob last I checked...I wouldn't want that light any brighter...you could always hit the bright light on the upper console to turn on those lights so you could see the change...you could also wire a led in that area but the problem you will run into is that you'd have to put it on the side on inside of that area make sure the door doesn't open up and in and than cover th light! Know what I'm saying?

Thats weird.. the "ring" does not light up at all! Where is the light bulb for that ring? does it have a fuse? remember that the lighter works but not the light. Thanks for any help!

I will but it'll have to be warmer or have the heat on in the car because it is FREEZING HERE! I will do that for you asap though...its really easy to remove the ash tray compartment area...just give it a try...

No, Jaguarishness would call for there indeed to be a bulb, but for the bulb/housing to come loose from it's mount, drop into the ashtray, somehow make contact with some loose change, cause a short, blow a fuse which will somehow cause the dome light to stay on, in turn draining the battery and leaving the owners puzzeled as to what the phantom drain on the battery is! [sm=insomnia.gif]
If you think this is far-fetched, look into the power antenna/freezing water issues in in the Series III XJs.
