Default wellll its time to call it...shes done

Well from my prevous posts of troubles...an update the problems got much worse. The gear box fault light came on a few times more and went away, normal operation of the car, thought it was a idiot light. Well today it went into limp home mode so I got off the busy highway and completed my journey to school. Drove home, told the old man,and he said he would drive it and see on the highway. I headed back to school in the family truck.

While sitting in the library I got a call, my dad told me to look up the tow number....my heart sank. The car would not drive or go into gear, transmission is done so I looked up the number and when I came home it was parked out side, immeditiatly I took the keys started it up, reverse works fine drive lurched and its fine after a few shifts, untill I put it back in reverse then forard, with the door open I heard a horrible clanking grinding sound and then it subsided, I turned the car off took one last look at the leather, wood and the jaguar on the steering wheel and shut the door, and went inside.

I think this is the end fo my ownership of the jaguar x type. We will be taking it to a transmission shop and seeing the damages.

Just needed to vent sorry for the dramatic essay

Disco, have you changed the ATF at all in your x-type? If so, what replacement fluid did you use? I want to know what to avoid if this is the case...

Wow less than 60k miles and the tranny is gone? Sucks man, sorry to hear that.

I think you should peruse some junkyards and see about finding another transmission there, then just having a trans shop do the install.

Disco I too have though many time of what I would do if I was in your situation. I have two thoughts. You could keep the car and fix it. Yes, it would be cheaper to fix it than by a new car but at the end of the day your resale value is the same. You go on to fix and put a few grand into a transmission but it might be money down the drain in the long run because you might go sell your car later for a few grand more than the new tranny you put in. OR You could say screw it, I'm done. I don't want to keep throwing money into a pit. At least if I buy a new car I can get the same value for the car. I've thought of going for option two many times. If anything major were to go on my car, I'd be on the market for a BMW e46 330i ZHP. SO good luck and let us know!

I hate to hear anything like this... especially because my x got 170 000 km on it, but it's a very hard task to tell why some of these beautiful cars go nuts more often than others. My x got new transmission oil three months ago and I must say It works a lot more smooth and precise now than before I changed Valvoline maxlife atf into it. I really hope new start for your car Disco!

Hey Stu

I hate to bear bad news but the selector cable will not cause grinding like you're talking about. I had a jeep, same sort of symptoms, what it ended up being was the torque converter threw some of it's linings off, mixed with the tranny fluid and grenaded my transmission, cost me 3500 to rebuild it.

Just wondering how old you are, you mention you're in school and your Dad got the car.

Sorry man, hopefully it's minor but I'm thinking it's gonna be a major repair. You can likely go to a scrapper for a used tranny, still probably looking at 3K installed, maybe 2500.00.

Dealer told me the tranny from them is 9K Cdn.

DISCO.... dude, go to car-part.com and automotix.net. GET IT DONE!!!! And CALL AROUND!!! Work the system bro, I did and i got an engine and install for 1300 bucks!! Just do your "homework" on it and it will pay off. LOL. When my X took a crap my heart sank but with some work and playin some numbers I will have a 40000 mile X with fresh fluids ready to rock. You know damn well your X will make you happier than any other car unless you bite the bullet and just buy new.

JUuuuuuuust my opinion
