What does the letter "s" mean

Hello I recently bought a 02 x-type 2.5 and saw that their is a letter s by the shifter (automatic) and when I press it it glows so whatever it is is it on when it glows or off when it's not or vise versa?

S is for sport.
It changes the gear shift paramaters for a sportier performance.
